Losing horses or what?
Well, after I got the 40K mile service done today (rotate tires and change oil) I went over and got the 4Runner dyno'd. For everyone's reference I have a 2001 4Runner with the 3.4L V6. Factory HP is what, 173 at the wheels? Well with a Jardine exhaust, the deck plate mod, the ISR mod , and an Amsoil air filter in I had hoped that would put me at around 200-210 horsepower. I also have 285/75 GY MTR's. When he had it hooked up he hit the gas pedal. It wouldn't even rev but up to 2000 rpm. So we figured we should pull the ETCS (skid control) fuse. Check engine light came on but we did the run anyways and it topped out at 126 horsepower two runs in a row... what the hell!?!?!? So we put that fuse back in and then pulled the ABS b fuse. It definately had a lot better response time after that. Check engine popped up again but we ignored it. This time it topped out at 138.5 HP and 171 ft.-lbs. torque.. better... but still... WHAT THE HELL!? That's 35 less horsepower than before I did any mods! I was pissed off and the poor dude tried to console me and tell me that the tires were bigger and heavier. Any of you with 285 MT tires ever done a dyno run? Is that the truth or is my 4Runner in bad shape? Or is it because the ABS fuse was pulled? Or do you think the MAF has Amsoil oil all over it? Or is the stock 173 HP rating from the crank? Please tell me that that's what's wrong with the numbers!!! If not I think I'll sell the 4Runner, buy a late '60's muscle car with a big block V8 and 300+ HP and no damn electronics crap and then just start gardening and birdwatching as hobbies. I think I would have been happier if I hadn't spent $50 on three dyno runs and just assumed it was at 200 HP... aggghhh.

183 is what it is rated at the crank so to the wheels it will be less. plus since i see that you havent regeared, that could also be something slowing you down. but i think your numbers are pretty accurate because i know that in order to get 200 to the wheels, an S/C and fuel mods would be in order.
dont feel too bad, your numbers are pretty right on for the mods you have done. and keep in mind that "to the wheels" is different from "at the crank"
at least you dont have the 2.7

Whew, that does it then. My day has been made. THANK YOU!
Yeah I was hoping the 183 meant at the crank not the wheels. If the numbers on the supercharger are indeed +75 hp I should be able to milk out a little more with injectors and a fuel computer so that hopefully will mean in the ballpark of 225 hp. Whooohooo! Thanks though again to the both of you for confirming that. I will sleep better now.

Hey Zach,
I think all the manufacturers state the power on the engine at the crank and never as RWHP because marketing wants the highest number possible (go figure). We, on the other hand, only care about what it actually puts down on the ground.....so RWHP numbers are our target.
Don't feel bad at all for only hitting 140 HP.
I saw someone else (asudan96runner) that said he was only getting 176 RWHP with his supercharger......now he has a right to be pissed.
Just save your pennies and get the supercharger!!!!!
I can't wait to get one for mine.

Just trying to make Zach feel a bit better.
I have a feeling that your situation is only temporary until you get what ever is holding you back worked out. I am sure that S/C has more to give you in terms of RWHP!
.....and Zach, do tell me where you find a deal like that on an S/C setup because I will have you order 2!!!!

Tire size makes a difference on some dyno's also. 285's would have hurt the cause.
(From what I have read and heard anyway)

The fuel pump is NOT optional if you get bigger injectors. The fump you have now will loose pressure at WOT, not to mention when you try and run bigger injectors.
Plus they are only $100.

Funny
Something funny about when we did the dyno testing -- he had me stand behind the 4Runner per safety reasons, but after he got spinning up to about 50 mph I could see the tires getting narrower and narrower as they got faster and faster rotational velocity. Was sort of neat to see, and there was a stingray corvette dragster with like 2.5 foot thick tires right beside it in the dyno bay so it of course reminded me of seeing their tires doing that on t.v. I do think they made some kind of a difference though because of al that extra gripping and sidewall rubber.

Stock 4Runners with stock tires will normally print about 150 peak HP on a DynoJet.
The tires you have are much heavier. It take more power to accelerate them to overcome the mass.
The tires you have are much taller then stock. It is a leverage thing. The greater the difference the drive surface is from the center of the hub the less leverage you have to put power to the street for accleration. To get that back you need to regear to make up the difference. I have 285s on my truck and they really zap the power. New gears coming soon!
Now I think your truck did extreamly well given the big ass tire on it. You should be really happy as it seems yours is stronger the most with all things considered.
