Need some help with JDM engines; while shopping for a new JDM motor for my 4Runner I found one but I'm a little confuse with the location of the oil filter and the shape of the oil pan. My truck (97 4Runner SR5 2WD) the oil filter is towards the front of the engine, right bella the alternator. The oil pan deepest portion of the oil pan Is also towards the font. On the new motor however the oil filter is located right below the starter and the deepest part of the oil pan is also closer to the transmission. Why is this? Can this engine be installed on my truck? The seller claims is compatible with my truck. Thanks!!

PS. New a new motor because the on the old one a rod cms thru the side of the block.

 

Just swap the oil pan

 

I am not familiar with the 5vz, but the reason a lot of motors are different between the 2 wheel and 4 wheel is the pans need to clear the front axle. Usually you just need to change pans and the oil pick up assembly from one motor to the next. Not sure about the oil filter that you mentioned.

 

I have a 97 SR5 3,4L 5 speed 4 wd and my engine is exactly like the one you describe, oil pan deeper at back butting up against the transmission and oil filter is below the starter. Maybe get the serial # for the replacement motor and see if Toyota can shed so insight. My 4runner was at the end of that model year and I believe was made in June or July 1997.

 

Pics? Could be that the new engine just might be out of an Avalon (don't know what they come with) or other FWD vehicle. Did the seller spec the engine for you VIN?

 

My oil filter is below the alternator on mine.

 

I missed the part about the filter. That doesn't sound correct. I've never seen a 3.4 runner motor with oil filter as you describe.

5vz should have the oil filter on the alternator side opposite of the starter. I wonder if you even have a 5vz.

 

Duhh, sorry guys, CORRECTION!!!! Oil filter is just below alternator and slightly back.

 

Which just confirms my post in your other thread is correct:

Just to be clear, if no oil cooler is installed, the oil filter can be installed in either of the two locations, and then the other one is blocked off. On a 4Runner, putting it in the rear would change it from a PIA to nearly impossible to get to, aside from the fact the oil cooler needs to go there.



This also means you probably need a new water pump with the cooler connection, unless your old one is relatively new, since I gather the JDM does not have one. You can sell it on e-Bay.

 

Thanks everyone for your replies, like "TheDurk " stated, they are interchangeable, if your application does have an oil cooler, it needs to go in the back port. now, since my truck is a 1997, and the JDM engine I'm getting is a 2000, Will I have any issues with the engine harness and fuel injection harness?

 

I recently got a JDM 5vz for my 97 Toyota 4Runner the oil filter on the new engine however is located in the back by the transmission and there's a cap on the other location.on my old engine there's an oil cooler and a oil filter do I need to swap out the oil cooler and put it on the new engine as well.

 

Here's what I'm dealing with: I bought a JDM engine. I changed the locations of the oil filter and oil cooler locations. BUT, on my American model engine, there is a coolant output on the engine block that feeds into the oil cooler. On the JDM engine, there is a plug installed in the engine block (tried to get it out with an impact driver - there's no way that thing is coming out). Since I've already installed a new water pump with the coolant output (that has a hose running to the oil cooler) I'm wondering if I should somehow figure out an alternate route to run the hoses...or maybe just install the cap style oil cooler that came with the JDM engine. I'm not in a high temperature environment and wonder if the cap style works in other places, why wouldn't it work where I live? Here's the other issue - the hole where the plug is in the JDM block is smaller than the hold in the american block, so if I was to remove the nipple from the american engine, it wouldn't screw into the JDM block anyway. Is cooling the oil really that important?

What are your thoughts?

You wouldn't think Toyota would have different block porting or threads for different 5ZV-FE's, but they where assembled and installed at different plants for many different vehicles, maybe its a Hiace thing. I would get the plug out with oxy heat and drill tap for NPT and add a barbed nipple, flush and fill.
