Oil filter change only - doable?

Oil filter change only - doable?
Can I change my filter without a ton of oil running out (filter change without draining crankcase)? The motor uses a quart of oil every few hundred miles, so the oil gets "changed" constantly, but I do need a new filter. How big a mess am I gonna make?

roll the truck over on the right side. then it won't make a fountain when you take off the filter.
kidding. i really couldn't imagine any way to take it off without losing at least a quart of oil, and having a ginormous mess. you could try slipping something in there real fast, like a gloved hand or bag, and then somehow magically have the new filter at the ready. i just can't see any good coming of this.

I'm sure it wouldn't be any worse than taking it off when the pan was empty... The oil is stored lower than the filter anyway.
Do yourself a favor though and drain the pan every once in a while ayway though. Metal flakes and sludge will collect in the bottom of the pan and if you never drain it that will never come out.

You won't lose any more oil than you would on an oil change. Just let it set for at least an hour after driving to allow everything in the top of the engine to drain down.

wow someone finally figured it out!! "Never change your oil again!" i like it! now all i have to do is make my truck burn as much oil as gas.... hmmm

I went from 1992 to 1994 driving an isuzu pickup that had a pretty good oil leak without changing the oil once. It also used about a quart a month or so and I figured just like the OP that it was getting good oil. I never even changed the oil filter either. I put over 50k miles on it during that time before I sold it to my Dad.
I was so sure that engine was about to blow at 100k that I let him have it cheap too.
He has put 250k more on it and it is still all original. That truck has over 350,000 miles on it and besides some worn rings and valve seals it still runs great.
Wish I could say the same about my yota...

You should be able to change just the filter, but if its really an issue just drain the oil into a pan and pour it back in when you get the filter replaced.
As for the oil additives that raise compression, a lot of them do work, but only for a few miles before youre back to how the engine was before the additive.

do a regular change every other filter change.

the only oil additive i actually saw make an imrovement (i have tried A LOT!!) was "Z MAX" this thing worked like a champ . . . . . . . . . . . .for like no more than 75-100 miles at most. then eveything back to normal. so i guess i will keep looking. what else do i have to spend money on every 3000 or so miles??
