hole in CV boot
#21
I think this is your best option. The INNER boot is easier because you don't have to remove the whole halfshaft, but for your OUTER boot, the whole thing must be pulled out and your cv joint may be damaged in some way. You can replace the whole thing (whole halfshaft with inner and outter boots already sealed) for about $120 if you do it yourself.

yeah. there is about two situations.
im not sure if there related.
going into the parking lot at school there is a big gutter and when i go over that it sounds like metal scraping stone or metal.
and then when i drive i get that squeak/grinding every 2 seconds or so around 5-15mph and everytime i jerk the wheel to the right.
and i dont think tires are a problem, they are 265's on a 2-3 inch lift.

Early this week I stopped by my local Toyota dealership to purchase a replacement CV boot and I was going to change it out myself. I was expecting to hear around $40 as quoted on this board. I should be used to this by now but my local dealer wanted $65 for the boot. I'm sure some of the yotatech friendly dealers do indeed sell the boots for $40. Knowing that I could get a reman axle for $69 from Advance Auto I decided to go this route. I just rebuilt the CVs in my wifes car and I'm not too excited about going through that mess any time soon.

65 for one side??? thats not right. I paid 33 and some change for one side and like 66 for both. you sure they didnt quote you for both?

I agree that it doesn't sound right but I clarified for one drive axle and the guy at the counter said yes. I have seen similar price markups at this dealer so I wasn't that surprised.
I checked the reman'd axle on Advance Auto parts web site prior to going in and it lists for $79.88. When I went in to the store the computer had it listed as $69.88 and I verified that it does have the lifetime warranty.
I put the reman'd axle in yesterday morning and it was really quite easy. I couldn't find a 35mm socket so I ended up going to sears and buying a 1 3/8 which was nearly $20. I used a tiny chissel and BIG channel locks to get the cap off of the spindel and it came right off. Everything else was in the article that is referenced in other posts. Thanks!
