Herculined Interior

Ok I am still thinking about doing this, especially since my carpet stinks again from the winter slush. I was just wondering if anyone has done this yet, and what they did about the rubber-ish insulating layer stuck to the sheet metal.

I just did my grille and front bumper yesterday. Checker Auto had a 32 oz can for $29. They also had a sale on the gallon (with needed application supplies) for $79 -$20 mail in rebate.

I am very happy with the results. The stuff is toxic though. Be sure to buy a good organic vapor respirator and wear gloves. It clumps quickly too, so be sure to keep moving and stirring.

My wife came home, looked at my 4R and said, "That looks great!" Normally she wouldn't comment. I will post pics when I get everything back together.

So far, from me.

PS: I still have 16 oz left after two coats.

Dry ice is actually not that hard to get - pretty sure they carry it at most grocery stores in the meat/seafood departments.

Did you all scuff the floors before applying or no?

From my experience in the sprayed-on bedliner industry (Rhino) you are really going to want to try and find a strong, well-established, bondable surface. The existing sound-deadening material probably doesn't fall into that category, based on what I remember it being like. Your best bet would be to scuff up the painted surface, hand-sand the edges, and wipe with Acetone. Then Herc it.

You could try to Herc the sound mat, but I don't think the Herc will bond very well.

How is the sound damping qualities of this stuff? I'm wondering about removing the carpet, covering the inside of the floor, giving the carpet a good bath and then re-installing the carpet. What do you guys think?

Not that great. When I used to spray Rhino, we would put 40 - 80lbs of material into the back of a truck, and 20lbs into a Jeep tub (or similar). Rhino was dense and flexible. Herc is thin and hard. At the most you would be putting 1/2 to 1 gallon of Herc on the floor of your interior. Based on how hard and thin it is, you aren't going to see much benefit in regards to sound dampening.

I ran into this issue when I decided to herc mine, I tried to remove the sound dampener and it is tough. I decided to give it a try over it, I scuffed it up with some coarse sandpaper and so far so good. I am using my floormats still. So that area doesn't get much abuse.
