herculined bumper/rocker panels/sliders
so i got the idea to put herculiner (truck bed liner) on the 4runner from one of my jeep friends. apparently its a pretty popular mod for those jeep guys, as there is a lot of information on it on the internet. application was fairly easy, and overall the project took only about 2 hours, and costed
-$33 for herculiner at pep boys (smaller can, they do have big can for 80)
-$8 for paint roller and sanding materials, picked up at walmart
dont have a chance to see what it really looks like, as i just finished and its dark. however what you can see, it looks really good. the purpose of this mod was to protect the parts from scratches and paint blemishes. i decided to paint the rocker panels following what the limited models have on their doors. also i painted all of the sliders, i kept them bolted on.
doing this mod entailed:
-taping off the area you want to apply the herculiner
-sanding the paint down, wiping with cloth, sanding again
-stir up the herculiner with an electric drill and bit
-applying the herculiner
-let it dry and enjoy
and on with the pictures:
what do you think?

Very cool, Andy... I've been throwing around the idea of doing this to my DC Taco for a while... Your write-up pushes me one step closer...
Looks very cool!

Looks awesome! I had my stock bumpers line-x sprayed about a year ago and they have held up great. I was thinking about the rocker panels as well - can't wait to see the pics!

Can't wait to see the completed project pictures! I was thinking of doing the same thing, but having it done professionally. You've inspired me to do it myself.

Did you use xylene or xylol or anything like that. When I did my bed we cleaned the bed like 5 times then we scuffed it with the scuff pad. The kit didnt tell us to sand. And when we were done scuffing it we washed it in xlene to get rid of the particles. I advise that you put a clear coat or the uv protectant on it because I didnt put that on mine and it is kind of fading. Good use of the product tho.

EDIT: Im my avatar, the vehicle is actually resting on the bumper in that rut, the passenger-rear tire is off the ground...no damage to bumper.

eric.....yea ill take some close ups tomorrow; i took a nap after school today and didnt wake up till 6. i herculined all of the sliders, and it was sort of tricky (they stayed on; theyre bolted) getting the roller into all the little crevices, but the roller i had made it very easy, because it was very small.
