Groaning noise under hood

With the car on or with the key in the ON position, after a few moments, I hear a groaning noise for about 2 seconds. I hear this everytime I turn on my car.

Is their an old man stuck under the hood? Could be the EVAP pump or ABS maybe.

I hear this noise too. Doesn't almost sound like something moving on a conveyer belt or something? It sounds like a moving part of somesort.

I think it will still do it w/o actually turning over the car. If you just turn your key to ACC, will you still hear it?

The ABS pump will pressurize itself when you turn the ignition to ON, after a few seconds.

Or just after the engine starts, if you quickly turn the key from off or Accessory, to cranking the engine.

The sound could be described as a groan.

From your nickname "02SE", I'm assuming that you have a 2002. What you're describing holds true for the 2001 and 2002 4Runners, but the older 4Runners have a typical vacuum booster for their brakes. The hydraulic brake booster that you're describing is a totally different beast.

That is probably the EVAP buzzing.....does the same thing on mine and I just ignore it but I think that you can get Toyota to replace the part.

Nope, my board name has nothing to do with my 4Runner.

My '97 4Runner has ABS, and the ABS pump does make the sound I described, always has.

Whether it's the same sound as the thread starter is experiencing, I have no idea. I'm just giving him one possible source of the noise he described.

Hmmm, yeah but Jamie, the EVAP will buzz with the ignition off as well - he's hearing it only when it's on.

Mine does what he's talking about.. If we're talking about the same source, sounds kinda' sorta' like an electric motor moving a slide - whrrRRZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ - and then it's done.

Midiwall is correct - The EVAP thing is different. I have that too. Sounds like there is a bumble bee in my engine.

Exactly: It sounds like an electric motor doing something and then its done...

btw... to get rid of this (and not have to buy a new canister), just open the gas cap a bit and then close it again.

The sound is coming from pressure in the tank forcing fumes through the canister. When you open the cap, it equalizes the pressure to outside and the wheezing stops.

My bad....you're right.
Mine doesn't do that at all, do you know what that is from?

I guess I deserved that.
I was hoping someone would enlighten me on that subject.
