Howdy! Welcome to the board.

Joey did a good write up on his. It's posted in the Tech section. https://www.yotatech.com/~corey/tech...irbox/joey.htm

Hope this helps!

That clears alot of my questions up. Seems pretty easy to do. Any advantages to drilling instead of cutting the whole bottom out??

Another question...is the drop in filter like this one?
http://www.knfilterchargers.com/sear...?Prod=E-2605-1

and if so, how does it work?? Does it just sit into the drilled out filter box?
Thanks again!

Uhhhh, no. A drop in is exactly like the one you have in your rig. It just "drops" into your airbox.

Here's a link to exactly what the "deckplate mod" is. Hint... it's under the tech page section on the front page. Just click on the approriate link when you're there.

Thanks for the plug Bob! It's nice to be back in the saddle again - but now I've got mod (as in modification) fever in a BIG way! Heh-heh! I should have known!

The deckplate mod only applies to the 3.4L or 2.7L intake. You 2nd genners are a bit limited due to the shape of your air box, or air bowl I should say. So you can't do the mod. And worse yet, Amsoil does not make a filter for your rig so K&N is it for a reusable filter. With K&N you have a couple options. You can just replace the filter and if you wish do the Intake Silencer Removal (ISR) mod as shown in the tech section. OR get a Fuel Injection Performance Kit (FIPK) which replaces your intake save the Air Flow Meter (AFM). Option 2 is much more expensive. I hate to be a deckplate Nazi but "No deckplate for you!"

Yep thats the drop in. The picture shows is upside down. The AFM sits on top of the big end. you have to keep the airbox but you can swiss cheese it all you want.
There's a member here that has actually removed the entire bottom of his air bowl leaving the ring to hold the filter and the supports to the body. thats a cheap alternative to the FIPK

*edit* for your other question I think the only advantage to lots of little holes over no bottom is that the filter is more protected from big stuff that may be flying around your engine compartment.

For a 2nd gen, while it is true you can't put in a deckplate per se, you can cut out the bottom of your airbox as many have done to allow unrestricted airflow into the engine. Only do this if you are not planning on doing any serious offroading in mud or water (it is perfectly fine simply driving in the rain tho). It is far cheaper than the FIPK if you are so inclined and then all you need is the K&N filter itself (I don't think Amsoil makes a filter for you guys yet).

Nice, I think I'm going to do this on mine as well. Where's the best place to buy the K&N Drop-in? Local parts store or on the net somewhere?

Most seem to like the Amsoil airfilter better than the K&N. It also has been tested and does a little better of a job with dirt.

drop in

I did the deck plate mod on a 3rd gen, and kept the stock filter. Do you have to get an Amsoil filter ? I placed a screen on my deck plate also.

No youdon't have to but it flows slightly better and is reusable....it's only about $50.
It has been proven to be better than a K&N on a dyno.

I thought I read somewhere on here that Amsoil didn't make any air filters that fit the 2nd gen? Maybe I was reading something completely different..
