Component Speakers

Well, I've just about got the new sound system in place. I decided to go with Kenwood all the way around. 4" Components in the front, 320 watt amp 4ch, Digital EQ. 5 1/2" comps, mono 400 watt amp and sub on the way.

Here is my question...Right inside the back door on the top, there is a light, the wiper motor and 2 1" tweeters. I thought it was interesting since I have never read anything about anyone replacing these speakers. I checked them and they don't work so they are going, but I was wondering if this was a factory thing or if the previous owner had them installed? Oh, I have a '92 runner.

Thanks,
Adam

I also have a '92 and I think that speakers were only installed in that location if you had the upgraded stereo package with a CD player. I have also thought about installing component tweeters there because it seems that you could aim them to bounce off the windshield right to ear level of the driver/passenger.

not a fan of kenwood...

anyways, i'm not sure if the 4runners are different, but my truck only has a spot in the front passenger side for a tweeter. the driver's side only has space for the 4" speaker. are they different or is there something i don't know or what?

This is how I mounted my polk components the other day, yeah I know about the wiring showing, I'm working on a solution to that.

Interesting topic.. as I'm about to get a new HU and a few speakers for my 93. I know some people said the front takes 4T instead of 4".. whats the difference? Will 4" work fine? Is it just a tighter fit or what? Oh.. and I too have wondered about those speakers in the back.. so they are 2", I'm guessing mine work fine cause I know the stock stereo in my runner sounds much better if you are riding in the back than in the front. :/ Gotta do somethin bout that..

It was an option called "premium etr/cass w/ 6 speakers and power antenna" $675.00 back in 1994.
When I replaced my front speakers I used Rockford/Fosgate 4T.
4T stood for Toyota and the speakers only had 2 mouning holes instead of 4.
I don't think they are made anymore. Probably not a big seller.
I looked a replacing the back speakers but a custom bracket would have to be made to mount the tweeters in the stock location.

So some 4" Should fit then but you only have two mounting holes that you can use? Because yea.. it's hard to find some 4T's nowadays. I looked a bit..

Thanks for the info!

You will have to trim or cut off 2 of the mounting points.
