I had the same issue. I was just going to replace the starter. The guy at the parts counter at the dealership wouldn't sell it to me. Instead he sold me $3.75 worth of copper contact pieces that are used inside the starter solenoid. I rebuilt the solenoid and that was it! I bought him lunch the next day for saving me all that money.

Hey Gallep,

Do you have a PN for that or an easy way to reference that? My dealer wants a VIN for everything.

Sorry no P/N's. Just give them the VIN and ask for the contact pieces within the starter solenoid.

Sweet, I don't need them now at all...but for the future. As long as you got them at a dealer, then that means they can get it. I don't want my parts guy telling me he can't get them or some BS so he can sell me only a complete starter.

For my 98 3.4:
Starter Kit 28226-54340(was $10.43) and
Starter Kit 28226-72010(was $19.59).
Both parts will be cheaper in the US

Any idea whether these part numbers will work for the 2.7L starter? These are the ones I ordered and have now....

I'm not having any trouble with mine yet but I had to order another part so I just figured I'd go ahead and get them now.

Looks like the Starter Kit 28226-72010 is common to both the other one is,
Starter Kit 28226-74070. I would double check this with your Dealer.

I know that there are several different starters put into the 3rd gens, all are very similar, but, they have differences. It is best to give the dealer the VIN number and have them look up the correct size. Its not a big deal to get the wrong ones, but, still.

Also, 4crawler.com sells them cheaper than Toyota.

Heres a pic I took when I pulled the starter apart. You can see the copper contacts on either side, and where they are worn. There is a plunger that sits in between with a copper lip as well, and when it goes down, it completes the circuit. The plunger should also be cleaned with some light sand paper while you're in there.
