Cannot get crank bolt off

I can't get my crank bolt off!! I made a pulley holder out of red oak with 3/8" holes for drill bits, and a hole in the center for my 6 point socket. I planned on resting the wood on the frame to keep the pulley from moving. I found out that my socket isn't long enough. I tried using a 3/8" 19mm socket with a adaptor for my 1/2" breaker bar, but that broke right away. I was wondering if anyone has used there starter to loosen the bolt? If so, do I need to unhook any ignition wires? Which ones would I unhook? Please help! Frank

You don't even have to disconnect anything ignition related. Just make sure that you know which way the "pulley holder" is going to swing (I think if you're facing it, it'll be clockwise), and brace it accordingly. I tied mine against the bottom of my frame. Just nail your starter a 1/2 to (max) 3/4 seconds and it'll brake loose.

That's how I did mine anyway, and it worked perfectly. Obviously, think about what you're doing and be safe about it. Don't want anything flinging across your garage, now do we?

PM me if you want me to fill in any specific details.

Yeah.. i seen that too! i was'nt about to start a thread about mines either..

but i had one of those yesterday on a crank seal job. somebody used loctite then overtorqued! & it was rounded too, we had to weld a socket to the damn bolt!?!!

used a snap on breaker bar and chain wrench with 2 long pieces of thick steel pipe.
with lots of cussing along with it too! !!! People are stupid!

Hallelujah!

Thanks for the replies. I finally got the bolt off. I clamped my breaker bar to my frame and bumped my starter. I heard a loud metal sound hit the concrete and scared the **** out of me. When I got around to the front of the truck, I saw my broken breaker bar laying on the ground. The part that goes into my socket was ripped off from the bar. I decided to try my 1/2" wrench with a 4'-0'' pipe, and the bolt broke loose after some heavy pushes. What a relief! Thanks again, Frank

Wow... think about that for a minute. What happens if by accident you hold the ignition on a split second too long and the truck starts with the socket/breaker bar still on there.

Are you still sure you don't want to pull one simple connector or fuse out to ensure this doesn't happen?

Well, as long as you were paying attention to what was happening, you could easily turn the key to the 'off' direction. But I see your point, and it'd be wise to take precautionary safety measures. The whole point of bumping the starter though is just that, to bump it. I could break a hundred crank bolts loose without starting the engine.

Agreed. You could turn the key off, but it can happen quick. I could probably successfully bump the starter a hundred times without starting the engine too, but there's always the "what if the starter relay sticks" problem. Although that's not likely, there's always a chance.

I'll have to try the starter method. I've used an impact wrench to remove the bolt. If you've got air it's quick. I've also used the method of jumping up and down on a breaker bar extension. Impact wrench seemed safer and faster.
