I just purchased an 02 4runner recently and the brakes don't seem to be acting normal. I feel like I have to push the peddle in a couple inches before it starts to grab. Once it grabs, it does pretty hard. I don't stomp on the peddle at all either. Just seems kind of odd and I'm really not sure where to start. The pads are fine. Havn't checked the back though. Nothing is grabbing or locking up either. Just didn't notice this issue with other 4Runners I test drove. Any help would be great.

 

Ive been having a simmular issue as well

 

something similar happened to the my sisters 96. just adjusted the drums and it was good to go, all the pressure was going to the rear to get them to begin to grab and not leaving anything for the front.

 

Huuumm? The drums are supposed to be self-adjusting but they might just need cleaning. I'll have to look and see. Thanks guys. Anybody else having this problem too???

 

Here's what I did a couple of weeks ago to solve that same issue in my 98 4Runner:
Find an empty place you can backup without interference. I used an empty parking lot last time. Make sure no one is near and backup a few truck lengths. While backing up, tap the brake pedal frequently. On the next pass, pull the emergency brake up/down a few times.
I did about 7 passes like that in my 98 4Runner and the pedal pressure is much better.
I think there is a write up or posts about doing this procedure around here somewhere.

The best way to adjust the rear brakes is manually with the adjuster that you can access through the a hole in the brake backing plate.

wmflyfisher: They do self adjust... to stay acceptable. You can keep your brakes working better by occasionally tightening them more by hand. That will bring your pedal up.

Also, on your 2002, you have a hydraulic brake booster instead of the conventional vacuum actuated booster. It is a totally different set up.

 

Yep,like everyone says rear drums need to be adjusted,I would clean and adjust them...also while you are there,inspect your bellcranks and if they are fine,lube them up as well.

 

mine grabs when wet at startup and sometimes if it doesnt rain. its fine after i stop a few times.. hmm

its probably a stuck Load Sensing Proportion Valve. i bet it is stuck down which would send more braking power to the rear. happened on my 91 pickup. made it interesting to drive

 

Maybe one of your axle seals is leaking causing the brake shoes not to grab immediatly
