black tailpipe on Taco

My dad just got a '97 Taco 2.4L 3vz. I've noticed that the inside of the tailpipe is covered with soot. My question is what would cause this and what can be done to cure this? The truck does bellow black smoke out or anything and we just had everything changed out in the engine so we're trying to figure out what the problem might be. Thanks for the help guys!

well.. its a 97 so that means about 7 or 8 years of exhaust fumes.

are you planning one eating out of the inside of the tailpipe??

Well, I've got a '99 PreRunner and it's as clean as a whistle with over 90K miles on it. So I figure there must be something wrong with the combustion going on in the engine. I had a another friend tell me that it might be the cat converter. Any thoughts on that?

That's fairly normal. It's caused mostly by the engine runs richer when it's cold so a lot of unburned fuel passes through to the tailpipe. I've never owned any vehicle that didn't do this. Do it's probably cool.

ive noticed this also, it seems like about every 3.4 exhaust is clean while the 2rz and 3rz exhaust has a lot of carbon on it, im not sure why, mabe becaust the 4cyl tacos have to work harder to do the same thing as the v6, thus burning more fuel and leaving more carbon in the exhaust pipe
