black out third brake light
#2
I don't know where to get a 3rd brake light "black out", but I sure as hell know where to get a can of black spray paint
Check you're state vehicle codes before you go do something stupid like that though.

It's not actually black paint;its VHT Night Shade, i used it to black out the rear tail lights on my celica. Don't go to dark or otherwise light won't shine through.

VHT is good but there is a lot of controversy about them turning purple after a while. Some people say it does, some people say it doesn't. I think it has a lot to do with the car living outside vs living in a garage. Weather, sun rays, heat, cold, etc .. it all takes a toll on any vehicle. If you want to black out your 3rd brake light do it right and just buy the LED conversions on ebay. Not only do they look real nice but they come in a variety of lens colors including the smoked color. Good luck

To remove it ,which i have done before, just sand it of with fine sandpaper 1500-2000, and buff the lense back to original. For the time i've had it on, about half a year, it has not faded. And it has been exposed to the weather all that time. No garage.

I use VHT nightshades on sportbike lenses and screens, never had a problem with it turning purple? I would go with nightshades and do ALL your lights...way cheaper than buying "smoked" lenses. I would do it to mine but I'm not a big fan of the "smoked" look on rigs.

OHHH... Well, from my knowledge I don't think anyone makes covers for the 3rd break light for a 4Runner. I've seen some for the Tacomas though. You're best bet is to get that VHT. Get a sticker of whatever you want and spray over it. Check this thread out, it should give you an idea of what it looks like even thought the topic is for a 4th Gen. Personally, I don't think it looks good but to each his own.. here ya go >> Click Me

I nightshaded mine and I have no issues with it. As well as my front lenses also. Yes, with light shining through it, it could look like a slight purple, but it's pretty dark. And even so, it shouldn't matter much. Unless you drive around with your foot on the brake, 99% of the time it will be totally black.
I would say go and do it. You won't regret it.
