I have a '99 limited with the multi-mode AWD/4WD system (A340F trans). I'm looking for a donor transmission, and I want to be sure another A340F is going to fit. Did the 99 SR5 4x4 have the same trans? Is all of the multi-mode gadgetry (sorry) in the ECM and transfer case, and will any A340F work?

I've been looking for almost the exact same thing, and this is what I found out about an hour ago...

In June of 1999, Toyota changed transmissions. So look inside your door panel and see when your build date is. Also, Federal and California transmissions are different. The transmissions are different if you have 2WD and 4WD.

As far as the 4X4/AWD, that shouldn't matter. That has to do with your transfer case (which will bolt up to any A340F)

So yes, any 4x4 V6 4Runner transmission will work (as long as it is in the same built date range as your truck)

 

Right on. Production date is 3/99. I guess this is the only detail I need then! I wonder what they changed about the trans in June 99?

 

If its like everything else they made it cheaper at the expense of reliability. I see less and less difference now between Toyota and Detroit.

 

Yup! Just make sure you know if your truck is Federal or California SMOG. Good luck with the search!

Now all I need to do is decide whether the tranny from a roll-over is better than one from a rear-end collision. I don't have pics of either one, but the roll-over is about $100 cheaper. Both would come with a 1-yr parts and labor warranty.

What does the trans have to do with CA emissions? Just curious.

 

on my 01/99 limited 4runner, I bought a tranny from a 2002 tacoma v6 double cab and the only thing I had to change is the neutral switch that the connector was different...

when i replaced the oil pan with the one from my 4runner (the donor one had the guage tube kinked), i saw that the body valve was different from the one of the 4runner, but installed on my 4runner it shift right and everything is good, only thing I noticed is that the shifts are a little bit crisper that my old tranny, but maybe thats only because my old tranny had 300 000km and saw some coolant in it when the radiator cooler blew out...

I work in a toyota dealer and all the tacoma and 4runner tranny are interchangeable, even with the june 99 change (body valve change)...

with the exception of 01-02 4runner and 03-04 tacoma that were drive by wire, so no kickdown cable

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but would it be possible to swap the kickdown cable assembly Into a transmission with the electronic assembly? Basically have a 2001 A340f to replace an earlier model A340f?

 

no. the kickdown cable assembly has a different ECU than the one with the fly-by-wire system.

the fly-by-wire system is the one used in the 2001-2002 4Runners which have the traction control system known as VSC/Trac.

 

Do you know if the drive by wire type a340fs have a spot for the kickdown cable to bolt down as well? This guy claims the transmission is from a 2001 but I'm seeing the hole in the transmission were the cable enters.

 

i'm sorry, but i have no idea. best way would be to have your tranny and the 2001 tranny side by side and compare the exterior. then remove the pan and compare the valve bodies. if the valve body from the old tranny fits into the new tranny then there's a big chance that it will work. please note however, that you cannot use the new tranny valve body because of the different ecu

 

That's some great info. Makes sense that the valve bodies are different. So basically you'd have to swap the cable assembly and valve body at least.
