3rd brake light problem

I have checked all my fuses and even replaced the socket to the light and my 3rd brake light on my 1997 4runner is not working . Could it be something with the wiring? I have never had a problem with it before so that's y I'm confused. Please help thanks.

Yes it could be a damaged wire problem

Could be a bad box of bulbs??

Do the rest of the brake lights work like they should ??

Have you tested for system voltage at the third brake light when the brake light switch is closed ??

Anything else in that area also not working??

Drill any holes or any other work before this started??

Yep. Before you throw parts, time, money into a problem, verify that parts are broke before you replace them. Verify that parts are good before you install them. Verify that socket is getting power before you suspect the bulb.

Next to our senses, the Digital multi-meter is the best electrical diagnostic tool for our classics. If no DMM, Harbor Freight is your friend.

Thanks and yes every other light works on the front and back and inside the 4runner. The socket looks a little burnt but the bulbs I put In it work not tested the sockets to see if it's getting power will do that today. Will let you all know if I get to the problem of it.

Unless you have a very strange 4Runner you really should not have brake lights in the front or inside the cab.

Then I keep a open mind people do strange things so anything is possible.

So that said.

Do your other brake lights work like they should??

At this time we are concerned just with the brake lights!!!

Hey, don't we have blinkers on the dash? So why not brake lights on the dash so we know that we're braking?
After all, a Prius has a beeper inside to remind driver that he's backing up-DUH! B it has no audible alarm outside to alert someone that the quiet car is backing up-DUH2X!
Goodness frickin gracious - the pointless things that designers do.
LOL!

97yota4unner*limited,
A third brake light is merely tapped from one of your main brake lights. Shouod not be to difficult to trace the wires.

wyoming9.
I'll keep you posted IF and when I install the third brake light on my first-gen - LOL!

While you're looking peek under the rubber boot between the hatch and body. Broken/cracked wires are really common there and it'd only take a few seconds.

We have do to have break lights on the dash RAD4Runner! A brake light might be nice too, I suppose.

Did you make any voltage check like we suggested?

Yeah I had to pull off the tape on it because the first time I did I didn't pull it up far enough and couldn't see anything . Had to take a few days off of it and all but I am one happy momma again knowing that someone can't use the excuse my brake lights are not working now..

Looks like you fixed more than your brake light if you dealt with all those breaks. Good on you! And yay a momma that ain't afraid to give it some thought!

My build thread is full of odds and ends fix-its, somewhat decent table of contents on post 2, and pics. Kinda like a lot of Yotatech is. Also, is that a snort hood on your 97?

Yes a lot of brakes on it lol. All lights and brake lights are now working no problem. Not afraid of anything when it comes to cars and it is a snort hood
