If so there is a good chance you have 4.56's.
Is yours manual or automatic?
If you ever decide to regear, just go straight to 5.29's...... trust me

If you do youre freakin lucky, just check the axel code maybe

You might have 4.56's from the factory, my 4runner did. Did yours come with 16's and do you have a lot of options like cruise and power windows, big brakes?

In the door jam is said I should have 225/75/15s But I am not sure because when I bought the truck it had 16s on it. As well as the unused spare 265 70 16
I dont plan on going any bigger that the 32s I have now. So I dont know, just a thought.

ahhh well my speedo is off by a lot because my truck came stock with 235/75R15's. I am pretty sure I am at about 3k RPM I am running 67mph. Before I did the gear swap I bought a little honda to cruise around town with. I spent 2 grand on the honda, and I love it cause I can beat on my yota on the weekends not worry about getting to school and work. I guess if your worried about MPG and cruising RPM's, dont go with 5.29's.
One thing you could do is go with 4.56 gears. And then get an older tansfer case and put 4.7:1 gears in it (opposed to your 2.7). That way kinda give you the best of both worlds. Although you would not be able to use your 4 high for anything. You would just burn up your clutch.

yea this is defintly a daily driver now, I had to sell my integra that wouldve been perfect. I think 4.88s might be better for me
Im guessing the older transfer cases dont bolt right up?

my 02 is a daily for me also. never had any gearing issues with me 96. but my 02 is begining to vibrate, right after our 4 hour hwy trip home from the beach. i have s.s 1.2 w/ 35's as was also on my 96. i pull a camper and drive this thing everyday unless i take my bike out. just sold my other car so with just my luck here goes my rear. bull but whatever so is life. anyhow i am also concerend about highway driving and maintaining speed, aswell as good wheeling. according to the "gearing chart" its possible i have 3.90's, 4.10 or 4.30. lotta help right? so judging by all the hype on here i should be goin with 4.88's. 5.29's would be nice but taking away from daily drivability. is this all correct????
meed to know asap as my rear is taking a poo all over me. oh and does anybody know if the rears have specific stamping codes to differentiate stock gearing? (like jeeps)
oh and just to throw in a little word of advice to the tire size issues. the 33's would not clear any better than 35's,the issue with clearence is width not height. the onlyway to minimize cutting is to get a skinnier tire like a 11.5 not 12.5. the body lift will not help with clearence as much as you hope it will. trust me i've done 3 of my own. cutting is always necessary.

very useful information from dark_fairytales. I have 31" tires with factory 3.90 gears. from what i can see, this set up has really bad acceleration but good highway rpms. My tach hovers around 1500 rpm @ 40mph and 2200rpm @ 60mph. once i get to 75mph my tach reads about 3000rpm.
So bigger gearing mean better acceleration but woeful highway performance?

Mine will be getting 4.88's (285's) - I'd definitely do 5.29's on an auto and 35's. No doubt about it. Raise the RPMS but ~200, but everything else will be perfect.
