Had a leaky wheel bearing seal on the driver rear back in december and since then I'm consistently blowing them about every 1.5k. My mechanic is not happy either since hes replaced everyone of them after the first one at no cost.

After doing the 3rd one he put a gauge on the tire and said it was too out of true and thats what was causing it. I have a set of Duratracks put on back in June of 2012. I went to good year and they gave me a new tire (it was really wobbly)

Leaking again as of a few days ago. Guess it was not the tire. Fed up with my mechanic. Went to the dealer today....they said I have a bent axle! Want $1.4k for the whole job, labor and parts. holly ˟˟˟˟! I have no reason not to trust the dealer, bunch of good people there.

What is going on? Truck has 170k on it and i don't wheel it. Running on BBS RD's 17x8 with 285's and spidertrax, ome lift.

Any suggestions? My guy install it wrong? bent the axle during install?

Hoping dealer will check axle once they take it out before replacing (they just guessed that by swapping rims for now).

It could be a bent axle from trying to press off a bearing and being clueless.

it also could be a rough spot a nick in the shaft where the seal rides .

Axle could have been dropped one never knows.

One of those things most people never look just throw in the new parts.

 

i have had the truck for the last 5.5yrs, bought it with just under 100k. This is the first time I've ever had a new bearing/seal put in on that side. The pass side had it done about 2yrs ago and no problems.

 

Are they claiming that the axle shaft is bent, or the housing?
If its just the shaft, then you can remove the shaft/backingplate assembly
and take it to a shop. Save mucho moolah.

Have you confirmed that the rear tires are balanced?

 

tires are ballanced yes. they have not confirmed anything yet, will take it appart and take the axle out monday but so far thats what they said, bent axle....but will confirm monday. did you mean "take it to a shop" to get it straightened?

 

You can't straighten an axle shaft, only replace it. The shaft has to be pressed out from the backing plate, which is one of the steps to replace the wheel bearing.

Ive had similar issues. I did the replacing several times. But only once did the outboard (one requiring all the pressing off/on of parts).
The last time, I got a seal for Napa, and I took the backer spring off, unscrewed the spring and cut 1/2" off of the female side. Put is all back together and have been dry for 100k miles.

from what i have read, rear bearing failure does occur at about your mileage to some.
after repair, some have experienced recurring leaks.
dr. coffee (on this site and you tube) discusses bearing placement as the possible cause. there are other posts on yotatech and other sites (good one on 4runner.org) on the subject.
if you are using the dealer, they have service manual updates on installing outer and revised inner bearings.
