While progress seems to be coming along very slowly, I did knock a few things off of my to do list last night. I got the block all cleaned up, chased the head bolt holes with a 12mm x 1.25 tap, cleaned all of the gasket surfaces & got the first coat of paint on it. When home on my lunch break today & put a second heavy coat on so it should be nice & dry when I get started again tonight. I plan to at least get the oil pan back on today & maybe start on the timing chain & cover. Have to see how it goes....one thing I know for sure is that I am going to bed EARLY tonight.

Your right, I should wait untill the timing cover is on. I guess I will wait. From what I've read the order of operations should be to put the timing cover, then head, then the oil pan??

back to business...

as far as the water pump install goes....pretty much straight forward...3 studs that you thread in to the holes....I used the same configuration as my old one...except had trouble figuring this out because there's a short end and a long end to the stud and either way they don't stick far enough out of the water pump housing to get a bite....so I short threaded them so they would stick out. was able to torque down (69 in/lbs...kinda alot if you ask me) and ended up spinning a stud out....took the threads and all with it...so I exchanged holes with a bolt and all was well...hope this doesn't turn into a problem for me...but if it does I know which one it is.

I will email Ted and tell him maybe need longer studs........Otherwise it was all good.

everybody seems to be telling me to use the gaskets dry. the water pump I put blue rtv on it....i guess i didn't have to...don't see anywhere that i had to do that but i did it anyway.

half a mind to put the cover on now, but I will wait until saturday (work all day tomorrow).

Just a little more progress from yesterday, I got all of the gasket surfaces on the head cleaned up & ready to go. Went ahead & put the new timing chain guides & tensioner on & torqued to 9ft-lb. Most importantlly, I called it an earlly night & got caught up on some much needed sleep. I feel much better today. Hope to get a bunch done this weekend.

Does anyone know the torque spec for the EGR plate at the back of the head?

I don't see it listed in the FSM....

Probably going to have to do that "bolt math thing" and refer to the last pages of the FSM for translation.

Hex head bolt + # of lines on the head + size of thread (not head size).

I do not have mine off so I can't tell you how big the width of the bolt is.

But in the FSM it shows a hand wrench in use, not a torque wrench...so it's probably snug + a little to not kill the gasket.

That's exactlly what I did, snug plus a little. I figure id it was that important, they would have put it in the FSM. Thanks for checking for me bud!

I got a little bit of assembly done last night, but mostlly just finished cleaning parts. I am glad to say that every part is now clean, even the hard to clean ones like the throttle body & distributor. Nothing left to do now but put it all back together.

Sorry but I didn't take any pics last night, left my camera at work......I will be sure to take a few before I get started today & go back & fill them in. I'm at work right now, but only working untill lunch, then off to put the motor back together!! I am hoping to have it all assembled today so I can put it back in the truck tomorrow. I know that is a little optimistic to say the least. I spent another $160 at Napa after work yesterday getting every last thing I could think of.....New belts & radiator hoses, oil & filter, coolant, PCV valve, ATF & a front pump seal for the trans.

A little chilly out eeehh. It's 8 am here & 61 deg. out side. We have a cold front blowing in this morning & have an 80% chance of thunderstorms today So I guess I am glad I can still put the motor together in my shop.
