and I'm right (have it right here)....

*clearing throat*......page 124, section 8, instruction #11 under "water pump, removal and installation"....Install the pump and tighten the bolts to the proper torque specifications".....what are those you may ask????? No "torque" in the index and no "specifications" in the index.......so you're SOL.

Exclamation

Ahum...Look in the front of the book under specifications... I believe you will find all that you need there.

Although I do not have it in front of me...going from memory.

Copy & paste, quoted from ih8mud forum for the oil pump:

"Top bolt gets the sealant 18 ft.lbs. the two side bolts 14ft.lbs. the two bottom bolts 9ft.lbs."

currently have 3 bolts holding my oil pump to the cover. the rest of the bolts are stuck in my pizza box template....but these 3 bolts are what hold it to the timing cover itself

I'm assuming that the 2 bolts you have out are the "side " bolts & they get the 14ftlb's.

From: Bryan Tx,
Instead of making a template to keep the timing cover bolts strait, I found this, it references the bolts length to there location.

From: Bryan Tx,
Learned a simple but neat little trick from a very experinced engine builder for preventing debris from falling into the cylinders when you clean the top of the block. You rotate your crank shaft untill all of the pistons are about half way up the cylinders, then using your finger apply a layer of regular bearing grease to the top of the piston, particuarlly around the rings. Then stuff a rag in the cylinders & clean away. When you are done removing all of the old gasket material, remove the rags & the grease will catch anything that got past the rags. Then rotate your crank again & the piston rings will push all of the grease to the top of the cylinders, once the piston starts going back down it will leave all of the grease at the top & it can be easily wiped up with the debris.

good tip.

I'm totally frustrated and just sent TED from ENGNBLDR an email asking for an extremely dummied down explanation of what to do with the oil pump.

my gears were not laying flat in the pump , so I popped out the smaller "Drive Gear" and yet the larger outer "Driven Gear" won't set flush.

I asked him to tell me what to do since I've never done this before as well as are the triangles match-marks and how to pack the gears with grease or Vaseline.

If you've got any tips, let me know.

I didn't want to disturb the gears but them not laying flat was not going to work.

I'm going to try to not be impatient, since it's taken me so long to reach this point anyways.....

Did you paint your block? Hmmmmmmmmmm?

Yes, I painted it silver. Goning to run home on my lunch break & put another coat on it so it will be dry when I get ready to start working again tonight.

Be sure to let me know what Ted says about the oil pump, I bought some Sta-lube marine grease for mine & I am just planning on packing as much in there as I can.

I am starting to get a little impatient my self, seems like I stay up late working on it every night & I never seem to get enough done. Dog tired everyday at work. I work from 7am to 6 pm every day & then go home, eat dinner, play with the kids, then head out to the shop when they go to bed at 8:30. Work untill midnight or 1 am & do it all over again the next day. Progress is pretty slow at this point to say the least. Still hoping that I will have it ready to go back in this coming Sunday......but we'll see, still a long way to go.

don't worry I'll let you know. I'm an open book when it comes to this stuff. everyone knows my skill level when I started and how I feel now.......but still I come up with questions...alot. so yes, i will definitely post up TED's response. It's like I'm seeking out YODA for guidance....hahahahahaha "feel the torque............, use the torque....."

when it was cold it made it very unlikely and uncomfortable to work on my truck. my incentive right now is that i want to see my shiny parts on there and get this thing running so I can start on my son's truck and maybe have that going by the end of JUNE.

Make sure you do a good writeup on your boys rebuild I'll need something to follow. At the rate I'm going you'll have both of them done before I get started.
