I have been cleaning parts & chasing gaskets for the last couple of days, still have a lot of parts to clean. I ordered a head gasket set & new head bolts from engnbldr.com. I am going to try & order everything from them for this project. I just realized just how badly I have been over spending with LC Engineering. Engnbldr sells high quality stuff at a very nice price.

i dont think 100psi was to bad if i remeber right i thing they call for around a 115psi. but its been awhile sence i last looked the spec up. did it have a bunch of smoke/air coming out of the dipstick/valve cover before you took it apart? but good luck with everything. hope it goes back together for you pretty easy.

*kinda looks like #1 was burning a little water to me

According to my chilton Manual, the compression should be around 170 psi. It wasn't smoking at all, ran real smooth actually. I do agree that it might have been burning some water, the metal fire rings on the head gasket where blown in a few places. The one piston in the pictures that looks clean did look like the rest of them before I wiped it down with a little carb cleaner on a rag. All of the piston tops are clean now, the gunk was pretty easy to remove.

sorry i was off father then i thought. now that you said that it rings a bell must have been one of the cylinders i tested hahaha. but i like how clean those came. if i was close to my runner i would show you what mine looks like. take the cab off the valve cover and looks like a steam engine hahaha but for 400 i knew i would have problems. but it starts and runs.

I bead blasted the timng cover & plan on spraying it with some clear coat. Gonna do the same thing to the intake manifold. It takes a little extra time but I think it is worth doing.

Since I am waiting on my head gasket set to come in from engnbldr, I spent most of the weekend cleaning & painting parts. I have been cycling everything through our high pressure, hot water parts washer at work, It basicaly takes everything down to bare metal. I cleaned the cylinder head by hand & bead blasted the upper intake, still need to do the lower intake and a few other things. I will tackle the engine compartment this week aswell. I hope that this engine is going to run as good as it's going to look.

Just checked my tracking number from engnbldr & my head gasket set isn't going to be here untill Friday , I guess I will just spend all week cleaning more parts

in regards to those pics of the SHINEY new looking parts.....shall I assume that is after you painted them? because if that's what cleaning them does...i want to know what you did

The valve cover & everything that is black I did paint. The timing cover & upper / lower intake I glass bead media blasted at work. They are not painted. Since I posted those pics I did shoot them with a coat of dupont hi temp clear coat to prevent oil stains down the road. They are a slightlly darker shade now. I will try to post a couple pics of them later today.

Thanks, Here are some pics after the clear coat. It might sound stupid to some people but, it will protect them from oil stains & what not.





Here are a few other things I have picke dup in the last couple of days. I got a smokin deal on these new axles on Craigslist, they are brand new, not remans.



Got his tail gate for free from a buddy on Tacoma World. It's a little beat up but I am going to try & pop the dents out & paint it to match. At least it will keep my cooller from falling out on the trail.

ENGNBLDR...new timing cover / water and oil pumps / timing set / head bolts / all gaskets.......great price too.

I am going to buy everything from ENGNBLDR from here on out. I got my timing chain set from LC Engineering, come to find out about ENGBLDR & the prices are much better. I didn't get the oil or water pump & my timing cover doesn't have any rub marks from the chain. I think I caught the broken guide right in time. I am trying to put this thing back together on a pretty tight budget. Hopefully I will have the motor ready to go back in by the end of this weekend.

tight budget i know ALOT about.

TED made it easy for that part of this rebuild (the ordering)...you knew you weren't talking to someone that was only "working" there but someone who's livlihood depends on guys like us continually recommending him.
