Yep...... I sold my first car, a 66GT/KR Model Mustang...... STUPID! hahaha... Worse than that? I sold it TO MY BROTHER! Yeah, wasn't that great seeing it driven around and thrown in my face! haha(I had to sell it to help pay the 'down' on my Condo at the time... So I was then sporting a 79GMC Shortbed 2WD with lift... It was nice, but NOTHING compared to that, ....and HE RUBBED IT IN MY FACE, DAILY! hahaha. Sadder.... I only got 5500$ blue book for that at the time, in 88..... NOW? YEAH, PRICELESS! HYPO 289 4spd...... Very sad loss! hahaha.

Thanks Yota Disaster...I appreciate the compliment. When I got it, it was advertised for part or a rock crawler. The pictures of when I first got it doesnt do justice to the condition it was in. My goal of getting it to look new and drive new turned out like what I had hoped. This is the wifeys truck and she still has more she wants to do to it but she has other things going on, soon as she gets them done, she will focus on getting it better then what it is. It is a fun truck to drive and I think it is about as close as it can be to being back in 88. I keep telling her she needs to get off her rear as when I get back on my 86 runner, hers wont have nothing compared to mine.lol. But we all really enjoy it.
Hello Mark..I always liked the early Mustangs. I had a 68 with a 289. If I can ever come across another 289, I will grab it. That was the first motor I really learned on and it was out of desperation. Great little motors. When I win the lottery that I never play, I will get back into the hotrods again. I am always gong to be working on something, and had thought of building something really quick, but then I couldnt afford to drive it so I am not sure what I am going to do when I get my current two builds done. So many out there that I like.

Just wanted to post some pics of a gas tank out of the 87 truck I recently stripped. Cab was rusted and twisted from some previous accidents and wasnt economically to fix. Everything else I have saved off of it. The fuel tank on this one is something I see quite a bit of. I couldnt get any pics of the inside of it, but it was typical of most. It has probably a 1/4 of rust on the bottom of it. That can be removed down to good metal and then coated. I have it listed on the first few post on this build.
The fuel pump bracket on this looks bad, but should clean up real well. The lines on it are probably clogged but I can get them cleaned out. This will be a winter project for something to do at a later time. I am sure alot of these get get tossed out, but is something that can be hard to find or expensive to replace. Alot of the lines on the top part are bad for rusting up, this one is good, but have seen then in bad shape.
The sock on the fuel pump isnt showing, but is coated with varnish and has holes in it that will let chunks into the pump and filter on the frame. Just changing the filter on the frame may just temporarily fix your problem.

The tank had about 1/2 inch of mud on top and just using a garden hose knocked these holes in it. One reason I spend as much time cleaning under my trucks as I do the top side. Just thought I would mention this as it was recently discussed. Works good for me to throw junk metal in and eventually will go to scrap. Every project I have done has either, rust in tank, clogged lines, holes in tank, or bad fuel pump/pump holder.

WOWOW!
You sure find some crazy stuff when digging into these! Nice! BTW, Here was my Comet Capri GTA.........(can't find the other pic with my 66GT/K mustang... but I'd posted it on my thread, haha... It's somewhere in the HUGE count of pics on my PB account
haha... )>>>>

And my OTHER CHERRY, which I miss more than most any of them! (38K orig. Miles from a Marine that was gifted this by the Core in 70! He never drove it hardly, and he was stationed in Victoria Falls... had the Brass Stamp on the back of it still that said "Victoria Falls" with a Marine Emblem......

That's really cool that your wife likes to dig in and get her hands dirty on her vehicle.I WISH I could get mine to be the same way lol.Mine loves old classic cars and what not and she likes to learn about how cars operate and what makes them tick but she refuses to get her hands dirty in motor oil and grease haha.
I don't mean to bomb or hijack your thread but i was wondering something. While i was under my truck placing my gas tank back in for the 100th time lol i noticed that i am starting to have small little rust holes about the size of a pencil popping up in random places on my frame rails of the yota. They have been patched once by the left spring hanger and on the left rear wheel arch of the frame but those places are still holding good and looking nice and strong but the other places that haven't been touched are the places that are starting to show signs of rust problems and im wanting to catch it before it ends up like my last yota did and the whole frame be rusted and broken into im trying my hardest to save this thing from the scrap yard but sometimes it acts like it doesn't want to be lol.

Somehow I do wind up with all of the bad parts. I have leared alot on how to get most of them back to being usable. The tank I am using for all of my busted nuts, bolts and small scrap.

You are lucky to have wife that will attempt some work. I hear you on the grease, but they just dont undestand that is just part of the territory on working on these.
Dont worry about hijacking my thread. I try to make my builds where if someone might be intimidated to ask on the home page to ask here. I get quite a few PMs from newbies to the site and I would rather that then to see them get flamed on the homepage. If I cant answer it, someone on here will chime in or I know some on here that I might could get the answer or least give it my best shot.
As far as the frame, I spend alot of time keeping mine cleaned out with high pressure air and a water hose. If you got pinholes showing up, it is probably worse then what you see. Depending on how bad, I would just cut out the bad area and have it patched right. If it is in really bad shape, I have helped a few do frame swaps in person or on the net and at first they were really intimidated, but after getting it tore down and starting to put on the other frame. You will almost feel like a pro.
If you can pull a motor and tranny you can do a full frame swap. It is just nuts and bolts. I have the steps listed on post 88 of the build on page 3. Just make sure you have a legal frame. I would say everyone I talked into doing a frame swap when they were half way thru it were really comfortable about getting it back together and when done, were really pleased with them selves afterwards.
79-95 trucks all have the same setup and all of the fluid lines go with the cab and same with harness. You would be suprised at how well it really is set up. I just need help lifting the cab and bed and then I only get one or two guys to help with that. After that it is all on me. Bed bolts are the worst part as some rust real bad. A good impact gun will make light work of that. Hopefully you will be able to save your frame or the whole truck.

Spent an hour getting the truck ready for paint and it just got to hot. Then got the runners out and headed to the lake. Some of the other pics didnt turn out.

When I bought an 84 truck, the guy had an 85 Extra Cab he was using for parts. When he bought the farm, this truck was abandoned and he just used the parts off of it and then wanted it gone. Mostly just took the light lenses and head off of the motor. Someone has put an 89-95 dash in it. Body and frame are in excellent shape. Biggest problem is no title. See what I can do about a title later on
This truck will sit for a year or two as I want to finish up my other projects. I am not so much into solid axles, but that it makes it a rarer truck and it is fuel injected and an Extra cab. Only has a small dent in the drivers fender, a little rust in the bed, but not all the way thru, and a bent bumper. Truck is overall in excellent shape. Guy was just gong to haul it off.

Thanks guys, It was a great find. I lucked out on it. It would of been going to the scrap heap had I not gotten a hold of it. I just need to remove the drivers inner fender and tap out a dent and replace the leneses on it which I have and the dash will need replaced. Got 2 or 3 spare dashes so this would be an easy project. Not sure of the motor and tranny. I have a rebuildable motor and a transfer case. PO wasnt sure about tranny.
Sounds like I may have gotten ahold of the orginal owners and possibly getting a title. Got to find out how hard it is getting a lost title, but wouldnt think it wouldnt be much if PO applies for it. You never know. One reason I keep my titles safe and sound.
PO didnt think it would be worth fixing as it needs motor work, has parts missing and it age if it would be worthwhile. I said I always like those trucks, and thought I could get it going. I have never worked on a Extra Cab so it isnt completely misleading.lol. This would be a easy restore. Still waiting to see how things turn out. I dont have a whole lot wrapped up in the 88 Pickup and dont have much more to go to have a nice little truck and could turn for a sweet profit and fund this build. Just waiting to see how things go.
Things are always changing.

May have a dumb question, but I have an older 22r that does run, needs a small amount of work. Can you put the 22re fuel injection system on an older style 22r motor?
Plan on bring the 86 Runner home this week if everything goes as well. Long story made short, My Downey truck is going to be traded to my brother. I will be keeping the Downey bed but it is still going to have a short narrow bed on it. He wants it restored to a real nice truck. He is going to put alot more money in then I was going to and has big plans for it. It will be sharp. He wants it painted white and the engine bay is white which save me doing a color change. I do not like a engine bay not colored the same as the truck.
I will be down to my 2 Runners and my 85 Extended cab. I think I will keep the 85 on this build til I see how things go for now. No big plans for the 85 other to get it running and leave it white. It will be get fixed up nicer after I get my 86 runner done. My goal is to have the 86 Runner the nicest of all of my trucks and the most upgraded.
My Favorite and will get done soon. Closer then it looks to being done.

Mistys truck. She goes back to work soon and is wanting alot more done to it. She is saving for a Can-Bac top, wants me to get her Bull Bar on and is wanting a lift on it. She has other plans, just dont remember what they are.

Will be my Daily Driver and get fixed up but not as much as the runner. Pretty much just stock. Mostly needs motor and carpet and new dash. Should make a nice looking little truck. This is the day we brought it home on July 27th.

Here is the first project that Justin and me did today. I am going to straighten out the bumper as best as possible and will order 3 bumpers for 3 different projects at later time. It is jsut to hot to work in the shop so we tinkered with the 85 today. I am going to make myself get something accomplished again on a daily basis.

Of course I cant have any project without some kind of poor workmanship from a previous owner. I will get the wires repaired right. Just dont understand why the jury rigging.

Wow Terry, you have a LOT going on. Thanks for the explanation post, I think I finally have it figured out as to exactly what projects you have going on.
There is a tan Can-back in the Yotatech classifieds right now in case you are interested for Misty's 4Runner. I believe he is asking $400 for it, which for a Can-Back is not bad.
I have always liked 4Runners over trucks, but something about that 85 Extended Cab gets to me, that thing looks pretty good!
Your plan sounds pretty solid, so good luck, I'm still watching.

Man Terry, I'm liking that 85 extended cab, looks like its in real good shape! The 4runners, and xcabs always get my head turning... well pretty much any Toyota 4x4 will do that, lol, but especially those ones, lol.
To try to answer your earlier question about the efi swapped onto an earlier 22R motor...from my research it can be done, If I remember correctly, I believe the 83-84' 22R heads already have the efi intake manifold bolt pattern, you can see the extra threaded holes even with the carbed manifold still in place. I've read that the pre 83' 22R's will work also, but you'd have to drill and tap the head for the efi intake manifold bolt pattern, or swap the head for an 83-84'. I was in the process of gathering the parts to do the swap on my old 83' before trading it. Hope this helps you out, I was assuming that you were talking about the pre-85' 22R's lol.

Not sure on the 22r/RE question.... I seem to remember reading that the main difference in the two is obviously the fuel pump location has to change and the Exhaust manifold on the OLDER 22r motors are ROUND EXHAUST ports on the Head... while the newer 22R's are Pear Shaped???? Also I think 83 and up 22R's are ok but you would need an 85 and up Head to make the match up easier with the EFI intake........??????? hahaha. Here's a couple reads on it, while I sat, thought I'd look a lil up for ya

Thanks Cory..I knew it could get confusing so I wanted to make it clearer. These are going to be my keepers. Misty has always had plain jane cars and wants something different and since I can do alot with these she is slowly getting the funds for hers. I will let her know of the Can Bac, thanks.
I would of kept the 88 pickup had I got it painted and done before the 85 came along. I have been fixing and selling Toyota trucks to make up for when the wife isnt teaching for the summer. Was doing this before I found Yotatech. Getting a title for it changed all of that. I do need a truck and this being a little rare is what got my attention. The rarer the better. I have nearly enough parts to build another truck for the Downey Bed. Just need a cab really and Jason and me are trying to get togther to do some part swapping and he has a cab that we will be trading. So it will eventually happen.
I have plans of my 86 runner being a unique truck on here when done. I will have it as nice as the 88 soon and in two more years it should really stand out. 33s,OM617, 4.88s are some of the things I can think of right off. Dont want it to be a trailer queen but want it to really be something. I will use the truck as a daily driver.
Thanks Ed..I lucked out on it. You and Mark have me feeling a whole lot better about the motor. I was afraid I would need to get the newer style motor. I have 2 other motors but they need rebuilt and am wanting to hold off until winter time to build at least one of them. Just need something to get me thru until then.
I like seeing something a little different. I only know two other Extra Cabs here and this is probably the nicest one. You just dont see many Toyotas here. But when I do see one, I really enjoy seeing a nice one. Any old car for that matter.
Thanks Mark...I have read a little on those and appreciate it. I have an 84 that I am hoping will work. I need to build a motor for Mistys this winter as every once in awhile I get a puff of blue smoke and know it is only a matter of time before her motor goes. It has 306k on it and it wasnt taken care of when I got it. I am in no hurry to build two motors if I dont have to. That helped ease my mind alot.
I was looking at some pics I have and those SR5 rims did have washers on them. Not sure why he thinks he needs ones with acorn nuts. I think there is only one style.

Here I am trying to get a Bull bar for Mistys truck. It came off of an 84 but doesnt want to go on. I have a few other ideas that I want to try. Must because of the difference between an IFS and solid axle. It is an ich off from the top of the bumper to the bottom of the frame.

Here is the valance I straightend out that Justin pulled off. 100 times better then it was. Just used a vise on the edges and made a big difference. Will replace at a later time. Working on the bumper with some results. They dont really show in the picture but they were bent up bad.

The 85 was used as parts and is missing a booster. I have two spare. Just cleaned them both up just incase one is bad. The rusted one seems to work better.

The rusted one is on the left. Just a little time and effort. Trying to get something done as the heat is getting unbearable.

please send summer back up here..thanks. it's been pretty gloomy here last several days, feel like I live in Seattle....but at least it's in the 80's.
anyways, trying to catch up and failing miserably at doing-so....so, I just will say, love the pics, love seeing your son digging in too. this is all such a great hobby for all of us.
