I'm really excited by this build, that's a nice Runner! =] It doesn't have to be built into a crazy offroad rig to be nice. Haha.

Mark, 2000 VW Jetta TDI 1.9l turbo these vehicle are from 1999.5 to 2004, same diesel, problem with the new clean (LOL) diesel is you need to add Diesel Kleen to the fuel because this new fuel they remove some of the lubricates and the injector pump hates no lubricates. the newer diesels ones are ok....I'm looking at the new 2012 VW Passat 2.0 l TDI It achieves up to an astonishing 43 highway mpg and travels 795 miles on a single tank without sacrificing one bit of turbocharged performance. That’s all thanks to its TDI technology that uses a direct injection system and runs on ultra-low-sulfur diesel, helping reduce sooty emissions by up to 90% compared to previous diesel engines. You can even choose the available DSG automatic transmission with Tiptronic to take that turbo engine to a whole new level.

And ok for CA......

Terry my father inlaw always had diesel Mercedes Benz and the older ones would run without a battery, once you started it, it would run until you run out of fuel...

One day would like to do a om617 or something close.

Ok, after all this time I got the automatic out of the runner

Here the only way to get to the top two bolts.....

Disconnect all the wires to the transmission

Automatic fly wheel...

Manual fly wheel...need a plot bearing....

Now I can get the 5 speed manual in, have not been working on the toyota's lately I was in Ohio and get a cold, so this weekend was me getting up to get work done. Also did work on the F350 and the jetta.

Pickup up 4 new rims for the jetta free ......

Thanks Ed, no on the clutch pedal I will put the manual in first. My 87 is going to be a automatic so using the parts from that.

Hahaha.... Every time I talk to my machinist(Phil, the crazy man! lol).... I bring up the OM617 swap.... He cocks his eyebrow and says, "WHAT? Why would you slap one of those in there? You nuts? I HATE working on those pieces of crap............OK, it's not a piece of crap... I just hate working on it!" hahahaha.

Hey, CONGRATUFREAKINLATIONS on getting that trans out! I'ma be right there in a similar boat getting out my W56 for rebuilding/replacing some of the guts, lol. I'm sure the Auto was BEAR-ish compared to getting out mine, eh? Fhewwwww! lol.

Hope you're doing great, Bill!

Got a question, the plot bearing is not used on the automatic, as I'm putting in a manual the new plot bearing should fix into the end of the crank shaft?

I removed the spacer for the automatic fly wheel and the manual fly wheel fits like a glove.

The manual fly wheel installed.......

Yep, new pilot bearing goes on the end of the crankshaft. I usual just use a socket that's the same size and tap it in. Good luck!

Yep, a socket will work fine... I feel more comfy using bearing drivers... You can rent the kit at O'reilly's for free(just a deposit). It SHOULD have the size you need in it... Take the bearing with you if you decide to go that route. I DID use a socket for it the first time though, and it worked fine... I used a small piece of wood and tappity tap tapped it in there, into it's hoooooooome! lol. Near the bottom, I used just the socket and an extension with the socket upside down(it has sharper edges, rather than trying to use the hollow/rounded side to drive it in). Couple good tricks in my build for removing/installing new on the "throwout bearing" as well.

WOW, RPM... THAT RUST COMES QUICK! Holy Cast Block in the Ocean, Batman! lol.

Just one observation, NOT trying to be a downer....... I see hot spots on that flywheel... Did you have it turned? I would, it's 20$ and worth every penny(if it's NOT turned, s'all I'm sayin, lol)... Also, get EVERY FREAKIN FINGERPRINT and spot off that thing, before buttoning it all up.... Those will TURN into hot spots in the future, ya know?

I use the flat part of the socket and then use another socket on an extention and driveit into the flywheel hole. A little different then what others do but I feel it puts even pressure on the whole bearing and not just the outer race.

Around here we call it Sabbing the Tranny", it is getting the tranny shaft into the bearing and sometimes and be a pain as there isnt much leeway for room of the shaft and center of bearing.

I stand and straddle the engine and and use long Phillips screwdrivers to use as guides to connect the motor and tranny together until I get it close enough to use bolts. It is alot of up and down, but from the top I can usually get a good view and use an imaginery line as to what is level with each other.

Poor pic but hope it gets the idea across.

Thanks to all for the information, just check of the plot bearing.

Thanks Mark, I have another fly wheel I'll take a look, the picture shows the marks on the wheel but I did not see the hot spots in real life...

ordered the new plot bearing and throwout bearing today.....
