Your trailer project is looking great. Earlier you was talking about an idle issue and the air sucking sound. I seen you got some of it fixed. Burping the system by raising the front end high and getting trapped air out helps alot.
The sucking sound is probably your VSV. It should have a black round piece that acts as a muffler. Usually they are missing or need replaced.

I need to get some shelving/storage built into the trailer next.
Right now I am most worried about the loud ticking sound coming from the back/middle of the motor. It seams like it got louder after I corrected all the vacuum hoses, and got the idle and timing dialed back in.

I did a real good coolant flush and refill yesterday with lots of burping. It got rid of the rushing gurgling noise behind the heater consul. So thats good.
Now I still have a slightly high idle after the truck has driven around for a bit, and the truck has a hard time cold starting. But its better then it was. No more 2000rpm with surging idle.
Today I put all new exhaust manifold gaskets on, and it got rid of lots of nasty noises. The engine is a lot quieter now.

Sadly while I was replacing all the vacuum hoses the other day I broke one of the plastic nipples off of the front black VSV. Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement VSV? I cant find them online.

Here is a quick shot of how the truck is sitting today.
The proses continues.

Well I thought I had my bad idle fixed, but it came back. So its not the AAV, vacuum leak, or coolant system at this point. Im going to throw in a new ECU coolant sensor and see if that changes things.
I put in a new radiator and hoses because my old radiator was falling apart and had a leaky coolant drain plug.

Took the truck up the hill in the rain for a hike the other day.

And saw this 1UZ at the Pick N Pull. Man I wanted it badly, but I just dont have the time and money or space to do that swap right now. Further on down the road.

Well Iv polished out all my idle issues. I still need to find the time to get my AAV hooked back up, and see if it works right, or brings back idle issues. I replaced the throtle return spring with a heavier spring and that really fixed the idle getting stuck at 1,500-2,000. The motor is running a lot better now and even sounds smoother.
I think my next step will be getting my brakes to work better. I am thinking I have a bad load sensing proportioning valve, because the rear brakes lock up while the front brakes never lock up.
I also bought some fun toys, just because maintenance gets old if thats all your doing 24/7. All work and no play.
So I did some reading, and bought some CB stuff.
-Cobra 29 LX
-Firestik FS 4' antenna
-Firestik 18' cable with Fire-ring connections
-Firestik 3-way bracket
-Firestik HD antenna spring
EDIT:
Excited for this!

Oh and I spent some time hooking the AAV back up with some fresh hoses. Old ones were very hard and cracked. It didnt change my idle, but it still seams to have starting issues. If I drive the truck till it is worm, then turn it off for a bit and come back and restart it, it wont want to keep running. Maybe the AAV is getting stuck closed.

A few updates.
The radio has been in for a bit now. Very happy with it, but I havent had much opportunity to really use it for anything hahaha

I put OME shocks and springs in the back. I went with the heavy duty springs because I haul a lot of heavy stuff and also plan on doing a heavy overland bumper with a spare wheel and Jerry cans. Its a bit bumpy, so I have to keep some bags of concrete back there till I add some permanent weight. The advertised lift was only 2.5" but it seams like I got a lot more.
I have some new torsion bar adjustment bolts, as well as some OME shocks to go in the front. Im planning on doing that tomorrow. Id like to try and level the ride out a bit.

Bigger tires would fill the gap. The under carriage of your truck is typical for what I have seen of west coast conditions. You are so lucky on that. I dont even see a spec of surface rust.
#89
Yeah it's super nice having the bottom so spotless. Especially the fact that none of the bolts are rusted. My buddy recently bought a 90's BMW from Canada and every single bolt on the undercarage is rusted solid.

The truck has just been trucking along. Recently moved to WA and it did a great job hauling all my tools up from CA. I ended up replacing a bunch more cooling parts, and finally have the temp staying at a recinable level even in traffic.
I made my self a new battery tie down today with my new to me drill press. I integrated a mount for a battery cut off switch.

I have a few new projects planned for my truck. Im going to do some DIY stuff my self to save some money. I got a new job, but they are not paying me anywhere near what I am used to making as a carpenter, so I am kind of back to pinching pennies.
Id like to glass up my own snorkel. Iv been doing some research and have seen some other peoples work and I think I can do a good job.
I also am still hunting down how my coolant keep getting air in it. One of the last places to look would be the coolant overflow tank. So I am thinking of getting an aftermarket aluminum tank.
Id also like to replace and upgrade my alternator with a larger GM unit.

I did some sound isolation/vibration damping with some quick roof patch from the Home Cheapo. $7 a roll and it took maybe a roll and a half to do the cab floor, wall, and inside of doors. Its basically the same stuff as products like Dynamat just way way way cheaper. Tar based mat with aluminum backing.
Now the doors go thunk, instead of clang
and it has cut down on some cabin noise and metallic vibrations. Still no where near Lexus or BMW quiet of cores hahahahaha
I also cut out the loud ass Magnaflow glass pack and replaced it with a cheap OEM stile muffler. That REALLY cut down on noise.

Then I made my self a new center consul out of some plywood. I still need to grab some piano hinge for the lid, and maybe some foam and leather for the lid to make an arm rest. Added a cup holder that fits paper coffee cups very nicely. Might make it a bit bigger for larger drinks.

Iv got some fun, larger, projects I want to do involving some welding and wiring, but I need to get stable monetarily first. Man moving long distance is a frickin cash drain especially when waiting for new jobs to work out.

Just picked up an 87 truck 4x4 and need to replace the exhaust manifold gasket and everything beyond the "y". Your thread has been a blast to follow and just wanted to let you know you've impressed this noob

Hope you have fun with your truck. I'm no Toyota expert but if you ever have any questions feel free to PM (private message) me. I'll help as much as I can.
On another hand, I am still battling my air in the coolant issue. Every time I think I beet it it comes back.
At this point I'v replaced almost 100% of the cooling system, put dye in the coolant to check for leaks, and everything ells. I think I'm down to a head gasket sucking in air. Unless there are pin holes or something in the heater core. It's driving me nuts.
It's starting to get cold in WA and I have no heat and cold start sucks.
I have a work truck from the company (Ford
) so I have my Yota in the garage for now. Contemplating if I should rip a bunch of stuff out of the engine bay and do a head gasket job along with some other stuff, or just wait and do an engine swap. Not sure yet.
I need to find better info on the 1UZ swap and what is needed to get it done.

That sucks, I've seen all the guys suggesting the jack the front end up as high as you can method... But you've obviously got something more going on. I'm new to Toyota trucks and new to working on cars so this place has been huge. Might do a thread of the gasket replacement and lower exhaust replace tomorrow. Hoping the studs come out easy.

Wellllll.......
I feel like a fool.
I think I finally figured out my coolant system issue.
The heater hoses were switched around. When I put the fresher 22re in with my buddy, one of us must have installed them in revers. Ooops.
I was driving around today, and I was thinking what could posibly still be causing this issue. Its getting colder here in WA, and I had the heater on and was getting no heat at all. I originaly thought this was because there was huge amounts of air trapped in the heater core, but then I realized the only other issue that could cause no heat would be having the heater hoses on backwards.
Whats the Sherlock Holmes quote? "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."
So I switched them around, bled the system AGAIN and low and behold I now have heat, and the system seamed to bleed much better. Ill take it for a drive tomorrow and see if that wooshing water noise in the heater core has gone away for good.
Maybe it will cold start better now as well...

Just ordered my first part for my rear bumper build.
A Trail Gear rear bumper.
I would have loved to build everything my self, but I cant afford a pipe bender right now. Kinda crazy that just the die from JD2 is almost $400!!!!
I know its a great bender, but I cant spend that kind of money and not make money back from the tool. At some point when I own my own house and garage Ill buy one. Id like to produce limited numbers of DIY bumper build kits for people that can fit and weld, but dont have the space or tools to bend and notch for them selves.
So my plan right now is to use the Trail Gear bumper as a base platform to build something like this. With the tire on one side, jerry cans on the other, and a small fold down table on the back that can be used in camp when the truck bed is open.

Im going to use a 2000lb weld on trailer axle and hub for the pivot point.

I kind of have a very broad idea of what I want and how to put it together. I need to come up with a solid plan, do some drawings and find all the hardware I want to use.
