Howdy guys and maybe girls haha
This is my first truck, my '85 SR5 with the 22re, 4 wheel drive and a 5 speed manual. I FRICKIN LOVE IT!
Anyways I havent done much to the truck. Just a nice head unit and some speakers. I am also running some HIDs. I just ordered an aluminum shell with built in roof racks for some safer storage, and a place to throw a sleeping bag or two when the GF and I take trips. I also ordered some new brake parts. Im not new to cars so I know its a good idea to sort out all the basic maintenance before doing any performance parts.
I am currently having two electrical problems. One being my horn does not work, but it some times beeps very quickly when I turn the wheel hard to the left or right. The other being my emergency flashers will not work, my turn signals do work. If I turn the emergency flasher button on, the turn signals stop working. I already replaced the entire signal assembly. No change. I dont think it is a fuse or none of the signal functions would be working right? Any ideas?
Anyways. Id like to slowly build an expedition rig. Something I can take into the back country for camping, fishing, and hunting. I like to weld and fabricate to I will be doing a lot of that my self.
Here is the truck when I first got it. Still looks much the same. Dont wory I got rid of those ugly seat covers for some nicer ugly seat covers :)

I did some work on the SR5 today in preparation for the aluminum shell with racks I should be receiving in two weeks. Im stoke. Planning a few other small things for the truck, but I have to work on a very tight budget as I am ones again jobless. No I didnt get fired :)
I had to drill out all the riveted buttons for the old soft cover, and then weld the holes shut. Painted everything with some truck bed liner for the the new shell to sit one. Came out looking nice and clean.

Im not sure. The fact that I am not working right now is going to cut back on what I can spend.
Id like to put some new suspension in with a small 3" lift. Any recommendations on a decent kit? There are way to many choices.

Great looking truck you have. To fix your horn https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post51724567 this is how I fix mine. The brass ring is just usually worn. I hear you can get the ring and plunger from Toyota for a reasonable price.

As far as the flasher issue, I would check and make sure no one hacked in a trailer wiring kit. Those causes a lot of issues. Welcome to Yotatech.

Thanks for the link.
As fare as the flashers go, it was the 10amp fuse under the hood that burned out. So that was an easy fix.
The best way to learn about your car is to work on it, and every day I spend tinkering on this thing I start to understand it more and more. Great truck.

Nice looking truck, nice work on the bed rails, I like how you filled all the holes and bedlined it, it turned out really clean! I know how it goes being on a tight budget, I was laid off when I first started working on my 4runner, I learned really quick how to stretch a dollar, I also did a lot of bartering, and trading and selling parts off my parts truck for the parts I needed. On the flip side, I had a lot of time on my hands and was able to spend more time (and elbow grease) cleaning up parts and painting and detailing things as I went along. Anyway, look forward to see more of your progress!

Thanks man :) Im really excited about the truck. Almost makes me want to sell my BMW track car to spend the money on the SR5 hahaha

I dont think my horn problem is the contacts being dirty. I already cleaned them when I had the whole column switch cluster replaced. I think its a wiring problem some where. Ill just have to dig around and sort it out.

Thanks for the posts guys

Ordered a few tid bits from Summit today including a dash mounted temp gauge for a second opinion on what the temp actually is hahaha
My horn started working again, but its so quiet I can barely hear it. Ordered some Hella dual tone horns.
Iv been brain storming how to build some sort of rack system on the sides of the aluminum camper top to hold two Jerry cans and some tools. Should be a fun little project ones the top is on.
The fun thing about this truck is that for some resin my GF has fallen in love with it, and has been spending money on it as well. I knew she is a keeper :)

I cant find this info on this question. I read the Wiki and the info on 4x4wire.com.
The sticker in my door jam says my truck is an '85, yet my truck has the IFS front end. I cant find anything that says if any of the late model trucks came with IFS. Ether my truck is a '86 and the sticker is wrong, or some one converted the truck to IFS at some point...?
Also I have been thinking of buying new shocks and I cant figure out if my truck has been slightly lifted or not. Is there a stock ride height I can measure for?
Pile of parts I am collecting.

The month that it was made determines whether it is an 85 or 86. I think August or September is when they switched to the next year. For example if it was made in June it is 85, but if it was made in October, it is 86. Just not sure where the year change is at. What month is on the door frame?

Your truck looks stock height to me. These trucks sit high from the factory. I have been asked if I have lifted mine in the past a few times and mine are stock.

I have had a solid run of really bad luck with this truck and ordering parts for it. Some of it because I was so confused about it being a '85 or '86, and most of it because I am having a hard time finding a well stocked and reliable parts provider.
I wish I could get these dam brakes sorted, but all the parts I got from Auto Parts Warehouse have been wrong. Returning parts is almost as expensive as buying them with the shipping and the 20% restocking fee. Never mind the retarded customer support representatives who are no help at all. Never ever do business with them! They truly suck to deal with. I thought finding parts for an old Toyota would be easier than finding parts for my old BMW. I was wrong I guess.

On to funner stuff

Finely received and had my aluminum camper top installed today. There are a few spot on the top I have issues with as fare as build quality, but nothing bad enough for me to raise an issue about.
Im actually really happy with it, and its the first expensive part I have bought for this truck that has worked out for me. Every other one of my projects has gone so fare south for different resins.
I also stuck some Bilstein shocks in the front of the truck, the rear shocks are still in the mail.
My front tires are really unevenly worn. At some point Ill get some steal wheels and new tires.

I need to come up with a plan to improve on the roof rack. Its really wimpy and kind of useless right now the way its set up. Id like a safari basket type of set up for my Jerry cans and some other stuff.

rustED 07-21-2014 11:12 PM

Man your truck is so clean! I like the new canopy! Look forward to seeing what you come up with for mounting a safari basket!
