Alright well its time to get started!
Engine is sitting in the hole with 2 motor mount bolts and 1 bell housing bolt holding it in place. Everything else has been either unbolted or unhooked electrically.
Head gasket gave on #1 cylinder and timing chain guide is broke on the top bolt and part missing on top of the guide that i can see. Valve cover leaks aweful. Clutch was slipping in 3rd and 4th under a decent throttle load.
So with that said you can see its time to pull it out and give it a freshening up. I was going to try to get it up by first of October but thats not going to happen so ill just take my time.
Parts list as of now:
Toyota radiator hoses
Surface Head
Surface and step flywheel (.026) per marlin
Parts purchased:
OSC radiator
Aisin waterpump
Denso plugs and wire kit
22RE Performance gasket kit and PCV valve
Engine Builder Timing kit and freeze plugs
Marlin 1200# clutch kit with slave
Thought about the larger cam and header kit but time will tell with that.
Around Feb or Mar i had planned to go through the diffs and do true tracs and 4.88's that may depend on how much i spend on the current work.
Engine is mostly apart and found the damage. Timing chain guide just fell apart when i pulled the timing cover, was still in one piece before. #1 cylinder had been steam cleaned and gasket split. Not sure if it was broke or a result of removing the head but #4 was also split just not leaking.
Not much of an update but going back together with it. It was extremely caked with oil buildup. All the bearings and rings are in great condition and i had the head surfaced and valves reground.
Runs great. But has an occasional miss at idle and just off idle. Need to track that down pretty soon.
Closed off screw on throttle body and engine still runs?!! I thought it would kill and i havent found a vacuum leak anywhere.
Truck has been running great no issues what so ever. After hunting season its been sitting more than running and has no developed a fuel leak on the top side of #3 injector. I originally had used some cheap orings from Oreillys and they did work but not for long.
Guess I will be giving the local Toyota dealer a call for all the parts to fix all 4 injectors.
Nice build. Toyo's on the Yota just look appropriate. How do you like them? Some folks on here complain about lack of power to turn hard enough to clean tread, being in LA sure you run cross more than just flooded roads. lol
I like them for what I use them for.
I generally dont go looking for mud. This is my hunting truck so whatever I may run across while getting to my hunting spots is all that it sees. The small amount of mud I have been in I had plenty of power to keep the treads cleaned out.
Nice. I'm torn between Toyo M/T, Interco LTB's or cheap Federal Couragia M/T. Guess I have commitment issues cause this is harder than picking which girlfriend to keep and which to cul. lol
Havent really been active for a while. I will update with a few pics from the last.
Added a winch but still working on getting it setup, need the aluminum bracket with the new controls, new battery, and larger alt.
Rear springs were not up to the task of hauling the boat, so i picked up some OME cs019r to help out, crazy ole std cab rear end i had to make it work. Made a bushing for the perch alignment hole.
No pic but also swapped the windshield wiper controls for one with intermittent run, so much better in the drizzly winter days!
Its been 5 years and i figured it was time for some new rubber so Interco we went. 33x9.50r16, very similar to the toyo mt in specs but very different in looks.
Really like the truck! Clean and simple.
Info on the winch hanger?
I lived in Louisiana for a while but you can tell from the pic Ive moved.
Couldnt ever leave my hometown much less my state!!
But looks like some fun over that way also!
Winch mounting is just some 3” or maybe 4” galvanized angle i had laying around. Its like 1/4-3/8 thick, plenty strong, mounted into the factory tie down and tow hook holes.
Finally got around to getting this wrapped up (mostly)!
Couldnt get it to free spool so i tore it down and realized just how nasty it was. Soaked the internals in vinegar for a week, then cleaned them up with a crushed walnut in the blaster. Blasted all the original metal parts and repainted them bc i couldnt have it not match the new control box!!
Runs like a champ now. Just need to figure out what im going to do for batt and alt. But it runs and i can use it if i have to now.
