Money pit build

Ey so I bought my 87 Toyota single cab pickup about 3 yrs ago with an ultimate vision of sas'ing it. Thought hey I'll never be able to do it but it's happening now! This was how she sat when I bought her. Red door little banged up in the bed but I loved her. Wanted to do little things till I could really sas it so I put a weber 32/36 carb on new rubber fuel lines, lc 8.5 mm spark plug wires, upgraded dist. cap, lc billet wire loom for wires, ngk spark plugs, lots of little things.

Then I bought an 84 axle complete hub to hub for 250$ which was a score from a friend an the next weekend I bought trail gears 4" lift for rear an ifs eliminator kit for front. I was so stoked even though everyone has something bad to say about trail gear but I'm pretty happy with their quality. That a fridge full of 2300 $ worth of parts haha

Then the hard work started in but luckily my buddy I got the axle from basically helped me install everything, so paid for an axle for 250 an got free install . Went from ifs to sfa in 4hrs in the first weekend.

So once I tore it down an swap the springs around an I had to start by moving my steering box. An cut the shock hoops off, so I cut the hoops off an sold them to some jeep guy for 50$ haha an bought new ones for 65$ lol. I also bight a trail gear ifs steering box relocation kit, which I had to modify to get it as far forward as I wanted an still use my drop arm which in total I moved about 4" forward which turned out to be a nightmare lol. Cut some rad support an body mount to push the box forward then drilled the holes welded tubes to one side of plate then put the plate in they frame welded other side up. All in all turned out a lot nicer than I thought it would

Looks like a solid truck you have. I just found it myself. It takes some time to get noticed by others. Get involved in others threads and some will get involved in yours. It is a good way to keep track of where you started and when you are finished. A sas is over most people heads including me. I have a solid axle truck but it is factory and I dont know it as well as I should but spend alot of time reading when others are working on the axle itself. I have learned alot from others. Looking forward to your build.

Awesome. How do you like the general ride from the trail gear kit? I can't wait to get an ifs steering box. Are you keeping it on the street or is this thing going to get a cage and dual cases?

We'll can't upload more pictures for some reason.. But my plan I to finish up the sas need to remount my shocks from an rear. I have all the shocks new shock hoops an lror rear shock mount to mount my shocks in /\ configuration. Need to finish my driveline which I'll probably have built by Olympic 4x4 it's about an hour away an don't mind leaving it there to be done since it's not my daily right now.

So far only drove about maby 200 mi on the sas setup by trail gear, springs are still a bit stiff. When I got the 4" lift I was like oh this won't lift it too much but ended up being about 8" of lift with everything said an done without settling the springs. But drive nicely with the stabilizer, it was a little back an forth play without it but a lot better with stabilizer.

Then tires an gears will be next after the sas. I don't plan on going to big 35" mtr kevlars is my idea of tires. 5.29 gearing an not to sure on lockers yet idk if I'll go air lockers I know there the best out but spendy. I'm sure I can get away owith 33's with 4.10's for small trips for now or just roll my tiny tires for now lol

But I plan to get it all finished an do some armor like sliders, front an rear bumper, an hope to do a tube bed an armor around body. Then in future plan to do duals cases, chromoly rears an fronts.

Plan to do breather mods front an back really soon since it's cheap an I'm almost 4k deep in the project now an can't be spending too much now (wife's getting on my case ).

Congrats on the ride-I favor '87s myself. How are your brakes? I've had issues with their layout and performance, and the usual wear and tear on an older vehicle. My last truck I ran all new brake lines and bled the whole system until it ran clear.

Mean rig! Haven't seen a lift that high in a while. I did hear higher lifts can get really bumpy, glad to know stabilizers make the ride a lot smoother.

I've had just a little bit of problems with my brakes. When I put the sfa in I had to replace one of the calipers an I've replaced my master an slave cylinder too but there from orieleys so the slaves already rusted (Mexican refurbished garbage imo). Got new braided brake lines with the sas which work nice rears work good. I've only driven a little since the sas an it's not the softness ride lol but not horrible. If the springs don't settle as much as expected I'll have to move the front hanger back a little. The stabilizer makes it so much better!

Plan to get the alignment done this weekend an put shock hoops in too. Hopefully

Feel your frustrations on the part store cylinders. Just went thru two of them myself and they were bad out of the box. I found some Aisin cylinders on ebay for a few more dollars then what the part stores want. The rebuilt stuff is just turning out to be junk anymore. The solid axles do ride a little rougher but you are getting it done. Im sure it will smooth out some once everything settles.

So I did get some stuff done this last weekend. Got the steering shaft extended. Which was a pain. Used 3/4 in solid bar inside of steering shaft since I couldn't get shaft to move after drilling out plastic pins. Came out pretty nice I think not 100% perfect but pretty strait.

Also got the new tie rod ends installed an got the steering aligned. Took it out down the road an without shocks was shaky when I hit a bump in the road. Kinda weird but I'm assuming once I get the shocks an hoops installed it will be fine since it drove great before.

This next weekend I plan to get shock hoops an front shocks installed maby rear /\ shock setup too but not sure if I'll have the help to do it.

Time struggle is real!!! Lol 60 hr weeks suck!

I soak the shaft with PB Blaster. It should collapse in the event of a head on collision. 9 times out of 10 they are frozen. It can be a difficult job getting them to slide like they should. A 40 hour work week can make it tough to work on one then a few more hours added just makes it that more difficult. Been a few times I just spend 30 minutes a day on a project just feel like I am getting something accomplished. Sounds like you are making good progress.
