ok, now taking bets: is it the front seal, d-plug, dizzy, or other? i'm betting on front seal and a bit off the d-plug, but also some from the distributor. i just placed a toyotapartseast order for a bunch of stuff, lots of seals and brake stuff.

 

If you replace them all at the same time and the leak stops, do you have to payout to all of us who guessed?
If so, I'll make a $20 2:1 bet it's the front seal.

 

dang, i need to read up on how all this betting stuff works

if the parts come this weekend, i'll fix it up, along with a tune-up and brakes. if not, i'll still look at it and see if there's anything i can do.

My money is still on the front seal.
Remember you have an efan, which hardly runs, especially this time of year. If you had a standard fan, that blows full time, i'd say it could be the half-moon. Heck, could be the dizzy also. However, the half moon, and dizzy are not under pressure and would weep like normal leaks, the oil pump seal...well...it's a pump.
really, i haven't seen your leak in person, i am talking out of my....so the above is just a hunch.

 

My money is on Front Seal.... 3 to 1 on a side bet on the Head/Timing Cover/HG corners, Brandon? hehehe.... JK, IAN! I would not wish that on anyone... and the FMS is gonna go quickly... I think you're doing the right thing by just doing a 'I'MA BE SURE' swap of all those seals/gaskets! Smart! Especially doing it NOW, before it's 20below! lol.

Best wishes, and isn't it a trip on how many times the Front Main has been pro-dated(modified to fit a new spot on the sleeve?) I think it's like 14 times since new! lol.

 

small update: i have a new front seal, so if need be, i can get that on this weekend, along with some rtv on the d-plug. also, the leak seems to be slowing, but that's relative

fingers crossed, i should have this taken care of by c.o.d. sunday

 

the oil seal i have is a different seal pattern than the one i just took off. the outside of the pulley shaft has a nice shiny groove all the way around. nice. now to go install the new seal and rtv the d-plugs

 

odds have now shifted to 3:2 for the front seal being the problem.

P.S. Don't forget to use some grease on that seal to balancer surface.
P.S.S. I like my Sta-Lube Marine Bearing grease.

 

Take a sharpie and make a big dark line perpendicular to the groove on the shaft. Dry fit the seal and rotated the crank back and forth. Remove the seal or housing and you should see where the new seal will wear. I have pics and an explanation in one of my threads about this.

I agree on the grease, .... I used the Red, as it has NO metals in it. MANY use the one Brandon does as well.

it's all back together now, and so far (fingers crossed) there aren't any leaks. i'll take it for a spin after the rtv on the d-plugs dries, but i did fire it up and it works just fine

as for the sharpie test: no interference. the groove was easy to see, and it didn't line up where the new seal wore the marker. thanks rb!

now for some lunch, then a spin, then front brake pads today. if the rear shoes come, i'll do those as well

i'm not so much doing the bakes while it's cold out, but rather while there aren't any mosquitoes. i'll trade you for those peacocks any day. the weather is actually fairly nice today, so i'll get a bit done this weekend.

 

pads are in. not "soft", but rather smooth. it takes less effort on the pedal to slow down. it's nice.

now for some pics:

here's the sharpie test. kinda hard to see, but i'll do my bes to describe them:

shiny line closest to pulley- groove worn in by previous seal
next shiny line, wider- path worn by original seal, i think
light line in upper left shadow- line of new seal in sharpie line

none of the lines line up. it's close, but not enough to affect it.



and gunk in the d-plug slot. maybe a bit of leakage here, but not enough to cause concern

 

Check your valve cover gasket for pinches while it's off. I found on my 87 that the last person to pop the cover had a wire pinched under it at the back of the head.

 

did that already. nothing out of the ordinary. it's all buttoned back up, and after a few short trips, no massive oil spots (just a few individual residual drops). i'll take it for a longer drive tomorrow and report back.

 

WOW, after looking at that one pic of the timing cover area..... TOTALLY would stick with "FMSeal is the deal", guess! lol. It had just gotten started, ..... but when it gets BAD? OH YEAHHHHH, all over the exhaust, hood, everywhere. GOOD CATCH! :GREAT:
