Hey guys! I think I may have just come up with a way around all your inspection/registration issues... just take a page from uhaul... they reg'd every thing they own [that has wheels] out of AZ... never mind that the vehicle has never been anywhere near AZ in it's life [or is likely to] even the stuff here in Can. is plated out of AZ... a thing that really P's off the gov't. here... some of their crap is falling apart too... they are always targeted by the inspectors during safety blitzes... anywho... they fanagled the system by setting up their "head office" there... you could do something similar by getting a mailbox "suite" and plating and lic. yourself out of there... ins. might be cheaper too... just an idea to look in to...

Hey Chef don't bad mouth all of california. We don't have annual inspections down here. It varies by county. I know what Aviator said works. I had a buddy of a buddy get a PO box in AZ and do that. Don't know the legality of it but it worked for him. He lived in San Diego county with annual inspections.

In any event, congrats Ian on never having to worry about that stuff again!

Hahaaha... Yeah, I hear ya... Several counties don't have inspection(UNLESS you do a motor swap... I don't know for sure.. Maybe you do. I thought you HAD to have it inspected that one time, at least, by the "BOARD").. But all have smog, no? And C.A.R.B. is REALLY gonna be getting more and more difficult when dealing with our older trucks/cars.. just how it is. Guess I could always move elsewhere... But for that? Nah... As much of CA totally ticks me off... I've lived here most of my 44 years and I LOVE EVERYTHING about it, Geographically, Weather(especially SoCal)... BUT, ... MUCH to be desired in the Peoples Republic of CA., just how I feel from 1968 to now... And the MASSIVE, many STUPID, changes that have taken place.

I'm never messing with that 'retest' crap again.... NEW Magnaflow CAT for me, every 2 years! It's worth 8$ a month to me! I get one retest free.. So I might try it.. BUT, the thing is, here, in CA... If you flunk badly.. you can become an IMMEDIATE "Gross Polluter".... and once you get that label... Well, look into it... Trust me, PITA! lol.

Can't you just go down there, should take about twenty minutes? My truck was from DC, just had to fill out the papers to transfer the title and pay for the registration and tags. If you mail it in I fear it may take a bit longer. Just sayin...

it doesn't just take twenty minutes around here. i filled out the forms, but instead of driving an hour, waiting 15mins in line, waiting a half-hour, turning the forms in, then driving home another hour, i just mail it all in.

also, to pay historic registration, you put the check in the envelope. the check has to have full name and address printed by the bank, home phone, license number, and made out to the mva. $51 total for 2 years... sweet

Ian,
Where are you in MD? I wasn't thinking, shocker, that you weren't close to a full service MVA.
But yes... 51$, no inspection, no emissions....it is truly awesome never having to worry about emissions on our old rigs again. Modify away!

Nice! So just to be clear, all you did was send in the form and a check for $51 dollars? Did you have to send your old tags back?

You need new tags.... They must say historic. As far as returning the old ones, in Maryland you do, but he had va tags, not sure what the deal is there.

this is what i sent them:

form VR-005: http://www.mva.maryland.gov/Resources/VR-005.pdf

form VR-096: http://www.mva.maryland.gov/Resources/VR-096.pdf

...and a check for $51

i had also included my title, but mainly because they misspelled my last name. they sent it back in the same envelope, and told me i need to get it changed in person at the mva. i didn't send in my old tags (maryland nor virginia), but if they ask, i'll send them back. my order of tags went:
va-->(moved to md)-->standard md-->(sticker expired)-->historic md

the address i used:
MVA

Last question. Did they ship the tags to you or did you have to pick them up? Sorry if this was answered before. I could have missed it. Oh, and sorry about all the questions. I did mail in my form and check though.
