if the wheel "flexes" or a lug nut breaks, i have bigger things to worry about than damaging the hub body. the wheel never actually touches the hub body when installed correctly. and i don't actually need my locking hubs in order to make it home

most sas installs use a larger wheel spacer than what i'm using, and they get wheeled hard without issues. i'm just daily-driving 10 miles to work, then occasionally up to the trail. i think i'm good

Steelies do flex, but that shouldn't be a concern. Hub spacers put mor stress on the hub body/ bearing, and I have read that the lugs can come loose and need to be inspected more often. I agree with you, Ian, wheelers use bigger spacers and tires wheeling hard. You should be fine with your setup IMO.

so after a big hoopla over state inspection yesterday, i am now wondering how state requirements can change every 3 miles. long story short, i "failed" inspection again, but with a completely new list of stuff to fix. i'll be buying a commuter car sooner than i think. then i can wait 'til next year and register the truck as historic, leaving all this bull-crap behind me.

so what have i been doing to my truck lately? making it near-stock so the people's republic of maryland will hate my truck slightly less.

Sorry to hear about the issue. State Inspection station are whack, they seldom are the same from shop to shop, even though they are all suppose to follow the same rules.
If i were you I'd keep it registered at your folks house until it turns historic.
Always take your truck to the same inspection station for re-inspection after you fix all the issues.
Always let them know you have no intention of selling the vehicle(this sometimes helps them be a bit more lenient).

I'll try find a shop i can send you to, I have a few friends that still work in Auto Collision repair, they should be able to help. I'll check on them this weekend.

actually, i think i can slide by. i can borrow a family car until january, then register the truck as historic. which would be sweetness.

but i'll still need a commuter car.

and the registration expired in october for the virginia tags, so that is a no-go.

thanks for the offer. work has me swamped the next few weeks, so i won't be able to get an inspection done for a while. and i won't be driving the truck, so it'll be legal

I remember when I got mine inspected...they must not have done a good job, considering the tires were bald and it needed new brakes Next year, I'm going to tag mine historic and I'm not gonna look back. Car inspections and Marylands emission testing are such a joke.

Did you take it to the same place to get it inspected as last time?

Just doing a little catch up on your thread. One day all the regulations you guys on the east and west coast have to deal with will get here to the center of the country. Understand your frustrations, I had to deal with it when living in California and dont miss it.

well, it's 2013

that means the truck is now "historic"

that means...

...wait for it...

...no more inspections!

(more to come)

Is it just 20 years or is it 20 years from the manufacture date? For some reason, I thought it was 20 years from the manufacture date. If not, I'm definitely going to get mine tagged historic sometime soon!!

Nope nevermind. I just checked the MVA website. It's calendar years, not from the manufacturer date.

Sorry if this was previously asked.

I have my form printed out and filled out, but I'm kind of confused about the process. Do you just send it in and they send you tags? For historic, the fee for registration is $51. Do you include that with the application? The instructions on their site aren't very great. Typical government operation, right?

I could be missing something blatantly obvious, which I often do

that sounds about the same as what i read. if they want the money, they'll find a way to get it from you. i'd call the office and ask them.

maryland laws are incredibly specific, yet they fail to communicate the details to the general citizens.

that would make it to easy for the citizens and to hard for them to issue ticky tack citations which would put lawyers out of work ...and we can't have that.

DARN CALIFORNIA! lol.... Well, I can't be sure, ...but fairly certain they 'halted' the "Historic" thing once C.A.R.B. got the power of THE KINGS OF OLD! lol.

Hey, do you think this would have trouble registering for the 'street' in Maryland? >>
