I changed gear lube in trans before i sold it. It had a input shaft bearing growl then. It is noisier now. Was gonna pull it and rebuild it, but came across this trans for $100. Worth a shot to me to keep it mobil. Then i can take my time with the rebuild.

Terry...which gasket are you suggesting I replace? the front bearing retainer deal?

I used...engine degreaser...purple power...and eagle wheel cleaner for non clear coated wheels (thanks whoever posted that tip) the wheel cleaner reallt brightens it up.

Still have some more to do...but Im getting there.

Here is the gasket number that goes inbetween the tcase and tranny. I see alot of them leak and is about $2.50 and is easy to change. I still put a little sealant on each side of the gasket. This is for a W56, I dont know if A,B, C matters.

When it get wet with gear oil, it acts and feels different them paper.

Yours looks good. The front paper gasket isnt much but the seal is a little pricey.
Transmission front seal and gasket it. Would suggest doing these when changing clutch. It was needed. Parts from Toyota was less then $20.

Greased and pressed seal in with 32mm socket.

How I poped it out and with gasket. I used silicon on both sides of gasket. ( Not Showing).

Thanks Terrys87. The goofball who bought and sold her back to me was nice enough to have a new clutch/ throwout bearing installed right before he popped the headgasket.

So Im looking at a prety easy swap. Just need to find the time. Im not much for working in the garage after a brutal day of tile/hardwood installing.
Im ususally beat down when I get home. Hoping to catch a day off soon.

You should drive up and pop it in for me....Been going for a few weeks without a day off.

Man highlux,
Not even one single post about me helping you put that motor together, these guys think you do it all by yourself, ha!

Now Im gonna highjack this thread for a post or two. Highlux's runner is going to have to wait on the tranny install. I am delaying him for a couple more days. Im a friend of his and am buying my 1986 4Runner back. Ill start a new thread for it.

But I am getting it towed over to his house tomorrow and Im going to get it going. It needs a few things. Highlux is gonna help getting all the diagnostics dialed in. He has got the orange one running like a top and its fresh his mind

Mulitple Runners have come back home and will be rebuilt in his garage. Guess Ill have to help him put that tranny in

Checking in, nice progress. Can't wait to see you driving the 87 around. You know, when you aren't Flintstoning it in the Trekker.

I can understand after no days off it does wear you down and just getting enough rest can be a chore to get caught up on. I had my tranny out of the 88 around 10 times trying to figure it out and now I can do it blindfolded. To bad you werent closer this way.

I am to be in St.Louis the 16-18th of March. Going to see if I can hit the yards while up that way. I have had to go to Kansas City before and now where a couple of yards are there but dont know any in your area. You got any that you recommed? I am also going to check with mightymouse as well.

Hey guys, no work has been done in last week or so. Been really slammed on floor jobs, and had to cater to a crazy cougar lady last week, who drove me nuts all last week.

Did get 86STLrunner's truck at the house. She fought a bit, but after some minor troubleshooting, it purrs like a kitten. His truck is so "unrusty".
Now it will be time to "blow you off the road dirt".

Im praying for a free weekend so I can get that trans in. My helper....who has a Blazer 4x4...with bald tires...couldnt make it to work today. He got a little snow and wussed. (His Dad runs a tire store) I had to do 250 Feet of hardwood alone..in the grossest house I have ever worked in in 22 years. With a weird clan of people who live there.

Grumble grumble grumble.

Update. I torm my back/neck up real bad on a big hardwood floor job. Been down since May 1st. Tried PT for a while, but it looks like a back surgery is on the table again. They talking maybe cervical too which is in my neck. Top that off with a blown out elbow. Im one gimped old man right now.

But....hey who cares bout me right? The 87 is running like a champ. Starts right up everytime. Tons of power. Idles perfect. No issues whatsoever. I guess I have about 400-500 miles on since the head.

Still have a super nice trans sitting in the garage to go in. I cant do it right now. Probably do a rear main seal in her at the same time.

Good to hear from you and that the 87 is running like a champ even though you're not. Hope you're able to get the back and neck thing figured out- and the elbow too!

Was looking through some stuff and came across the pictures I recieved when I bought the runner. Father son build. I got such a deal on this truck.

My 4runners history. Kid owned her and drove her through a fence.
Insurance co totaled her. PO and son bought her to repair.

I always enjoy seeing before, during and after pictures. Always nice to see the transformation. Sometimes it does not even seem like the same truck when completed. That color just looks great on your runner. Looking forward to seeing it in person.

Well Terry is on his way up for National Guard weekend and is gonna plop the trans/transfercase in the 4runner for me. Been scrambling to find him a helper cause Im not much help wounded. My nephew is is super strong is gonna come assist. Thank goodness. Im trying to get the garage cleaned up and Trekker moved out of garage. It wont be perfect....but theres room to work now.

Im telling you right now folks. Terry is probably the coolest guy in the entire world. A considerable asset to this board.

Ill post up more info as it comes in. Im actually tripping over the garage being clean enough.

Terry came over and got the trans out with the nephews help. I played tool boy. Need to get a few bolts that the guy who bought it from me left out. Some bell housing bolts and crossmember bolts. Also need a throwout bearing clip.

Incredibly nice gentleman. I felt guilty I couldnt help more but Terry set me at ease. Im sending him home with some goodies.

I really cant say enough good stuff about this guy.

Im tired. Ill report nack in tomorrow with the progress.

Have to round up some bolts in the morning.

Thanks Terry.
