So update.

The good.

Great power.
No leaks.
Exhaust is pretty quiet. Ill fix that here soon enough.
I've almost forgot I just did the head gasket and its all downhill from here.

The bad.

Well on my end...from what work I've done...I'm pleased. A little tappy despite setting the valves .007 and .011 Probably stuff breaking in. Or not.
Upper end getting oiled nicely.

Either alternator is taking a dump or the round connector to it needs to be cleaned. I noticed it was chalky.

Front end feels loose. Play in the wheel.

Brakes...inconsistent pedal. Sometimes pedal just drops. Not losing fluid and no leaks.

Squeaks. She sounds like a buckboard wagon.

Air is low on Freon. Wont kick on.

Still has a little growl in the tranny. Prolly last forever. But it annoys me.

Got off my butt and put an alternator on it.
That was the charging issue.

Took a ride and assessed the brakes and steering.

Going to adjust drums and bleed brakes tomorrow.

Test some sensors and such. Still chasing a few gremlins.

Be roadworthy soon.

So I bought a new TPS today. For giggles I tested and adjusted the old one. Got it within specs. Running like
a top.

Up getting a safety inspection. I hope it passes. Maybe they wont notice the missing cat.

Emissions exempt anyways.

Got her running pretty decent. Valves alot quieter now.
Pretty much done with the engine stuff.

Repaired a small vacuum leak I found with a propane torch.
Much cleaner than spraying carb cleaner everywhere. First time
I used gas to find a leak. Pretty neat trick.

Here are a couple vids.

Exhaust... Lc header. No cat. 2inch pipe into stockish log muffler.

So with that adventure nearly wrapped up folks, we will head down the treacherous and slippery road of a W56B rebuild.

I have been doing some research. Seeing how I rebuilt a few manual trannies in the past, I have decided I will to this one as well.

Current trans is the original w56b that came in her new. Somewhere north of 220k. She has a growl in idle, and
worbley noise accelerating 1-3.

Ill need to get a press and some bearing seperators and such.

I need to see who has the good rebuild kit as well.
I want the good japanese bearings.

Not to be forgotten..I rolled the 87 round the block today. I get home and park in the driveway...pretty decent slope to it. Oil puking out from the back of the valve cover. I had left the valve cover bolts too loose and at the angle in the driveway...it collected at the back of the cover and leaked good.

She ran really great. Fired right up. Idled up then back to 850 after warmup. Great power. Actually chirped second. Shes got some pep for sure.

Still planning on the tranny. Some damn trekker has distracted me.

Great news today folks. Was home from work early and a transmission/transfercase popped up on craigslist. From an 87 4runner nontheless. No price. Called the guy up, came from a running truck. He's like my freind left it here 3 years ago and said sell it. He was "whatya give me for it" I was how bout $100? He said ok. He lived 5 min away too!

Has plugs on it, slave, etc...clutch fork...figure if it was pulled out to be replaced...they would have reused that stuff. Shift through all the gears.

So Im gonna clean it up and run it. Input shaft is nice and tight. Cross your fingers!!

Now, to find time to pop it in. Clutch is new and TO bearing...so I should be able to do it sunday if I get off my butt. If the trans is decent...and I get it done...I can devote the garage to pulling the trekker apart. Have been waiting to do that, but knew I had to deal with the 87's trans first.

Im pretty happy today!

This thread is bringing up memories. Sold my dads mint condition 93 pickup that he owned for 11 years and I remember growing up with it. 1 year with the new owner and he burned it to the ground

Carried it up to the garage. Man that was pretty heavy. Dont think Ill try that again.

Popped it up on some jackstands and drained the trans fluid. Started cleaning the rear main seal spray from the bellhousing.

Look how nice that gear oil was!! Thats a good sign!!

You may have lucked out as that is some great looking gear oil. The paper gasket from Toyota is $2.14 and even though it is paper, when it gets soaked with oil, it seems to take on a completely different material. Also changing the seal and gasket on the front of the tranny is easily done if you decide to try and wrap that up as well.
