Nice trade,yea I cracked a rocker assembly using a impact once,I know... dumb move,I was just cinching it down with my 3/8 impact and it cracked.

Gosh, 400 bucks for the adapter... 300-ish for the bud built crossmember...

Well, I figure if I have to replace the rocker assembly I should just do the head gasket too because my engine is burning oil. New head studs. Have the head surfaced. All new stuff to me. Looks like I'm riding the motorcycle for a while. I just need the truck ready and running well for winter. Can't be breakin down on me. I painted the engine bay flat black on friday. Looks heaps better. With the painted VC and plenum its starting to look like a show engine all of a sudden! u guys want a teaser pic?

It's pretty pricey to do that's for sure.

I would so it while you have it apart. The machinist I use will do the head for around 100$.

Yes we need pics!!! Haha

So I'm a little nervous about tearing the engine down and replacing the head gasket while I'm replacing the cracked rocker assembly. I have a digital copy of the FSM... but does anyone have any other helpful advice or tricks?

I'm trying to think of everything I'll need

-Head gasket
-Head bolts
-Intake gasket set
-Exhaust gasket
-TB gasket
-Steel TC guides

I'm sure I'm missing things. My valve cover gasket and 1/2 moons are still new. Is there a timing cover gasket? I think I can do it... I just have to do it by the book. Anyone know an epic write up? Thanks y'all, and thanks Gizler for hookin a brother up with much needed parts!!

What a shame.. I was so close to being done with the later upper manifold swap. Painted engine bay and everything!

Check my thread out also, I have a lot of photos on it as well. I could also try and come over to give you a hand with it sometime.

It's really easy. One of the easiest engines I work on.

Yes there is a timing cover gasket. Same kind of material as the intake gaskets.

I can get you a better deal on an OEM head gasket if you want to go with that. A friend of mine is the parts manager at bellevue Toyota

I would also look into doing a water pump and oil pump if you are going to dig that far into it.

Really easy to do. There are enough guides and people on here to help out.

Like I said, I can come out for a day. We could could get a lot done in just a few hours time

I wouldn't say OEM is best. I have had good luck with non OEM as well. Either way you can't go wrong

I bought the first part for my engine overhaul today. My chain and sprocket look brand new so I found just the metal guide for $18. Ships free. Dont need to drop $56 on a whole kit.

I started cleaning and organizing my garage because I wanted to have a nice work space and place for all the parts. Hopefully begin the tear down this week! I've always had my suspicions about a HG leak with my truck since I bought it, and it does burn a decent amount of oil. So I'm looking forward to see what I find and then doing things the right way and having some peace of mind. Maybe I'll pickup an OT shift and buy an engnbuilder street RV head!

Very nice.

It might not be a bad idea to just replace the whole timing kit. Especial since you are going to have to take it off to to the teardown anyhow.

My luck I would leave it, replace the guides, and then have the gain blow on me 500 miles after the fix.

Even if you decide to not do the chain, I would consider doing the tensioner.


I might even have some extra new sprockets. I will have to look. If I do they are yours.

I think I literally had an incomplete feeling the past few days because I wasn't working on the truck. But yesterday I got a little done.

Old orange rtv gasket from PO, and the fancy new felpro.

It's missing the 2 vacuum ports circled in red on the old one. So I guess I could put a mini filter on the valve cover, but not sure what to do with the other hose. Thoughts?

Ok, so apparently that vacuum hose is part of the air flow valve or AFV. I read the later style throttle body has this built into it so when you do this swap you can remove the AFV. Less crud. Sweet. But, I'll hafta go get a $30 junkyard TB to use as the valve cover vent tube (VC front vacuum line) also hooks to the later TB. Problem solved, but I still gotta figure out removal of the AFV....

Ooooook, I got a 91 throttle body. Cleaned it. Blasted it. Painted it, and installed it. All in 4 hours! I only have one more coolant hose to reroute and I'm done. Progress pic!

After I figure out that hose I can swap out my cracked rocker assembly for the one Gizler sent me (awesomeness) and be back on the road. Its amazing how my engine bay has transformed.
