dipstick with new O-ring ON
distributor cap brace ON
11 exhaust studs ON (1 in the mail)
new injector seat-cups w/ new O-rings ON
water inlet ON
thermostat housing (minus thermostat) ON

aaaaaand...clothes folded, dishes washed,checkbooks balanced,chicken cut up and marinating for dinner.....oh, and, packaged up stuff for Witch Hunter to be mailed.

time for lunch / shower and trip to the dentist for the boys.

may just get that flywheel on and clutch etc on and put this thing in today.......oh BRANDON.........

 

Dang Jerry, thats a productive day and it's only half over! Good luck getting the motor in, looking forward to hearing it run.

 

thanks Rob. Joe and I had a nice conversation today and agreed that we are 100% sure of the solid-ness of this build. absolutely the only worrisome areas are the freeze plugs on one side (I forget which side right now) that are just pressed in and do not have locktite on the versus the other side. My only other concerns are the cam seals and rear main....which are all the same concept as the oil pump front seal. I told him, I did mine on my motor without any problems with it, and I feel sure his will be fine.

have to remember to put the spark plugs in BEFORE we put the motor in because they are a PITA to reach otherwise.

nah. no reason to be impatient now....we've taken this long...

injectors sent out yesterday....probably be back by wednesday.

I did successfully NOT break the bimetallic valve on the back of the motor. anyone w/ a 3vze knows there is a small valve on the back that gets broken either removing or replacing the vacuum hose. we were able to do both without breaking it. yay.

work today and tomorrow, so no progress. saturday a run to rausch to meet the guys.

PITA doing it with just the two of us.....but, it's how I really wanted it.

 

so anyway. a few concerns.

1st off, I remember it being a PITA to detach the motor from the transmission even when it was all unbolted.....so I was mentally prepared for it to be an equal or worse PITA to get it back in.....it was. The motor is sitting on it's mounts but needs to be back about 1/4'' more and I am hoping that in tightening the bolts to the transmission, it will not only take up the gap between the engine and it, but also pull the motor back a bit so it lines up on the mount a bit better.

I am glad Joe and I had the opportunity to put this in ourselves. Although I thoroughly appreciate and still will need Brandon's help, I always like the idea of doing stuff for myself.

2nd concern is the starter......youch, it's gonna be tight poking that in. I think I remember taking it out while the motor was in, so I guess it goes in just the same, with or without additional cursing.

3rd is the headers......yep, that engine bay looks just as small as I remember it was. for my sake, I am not going to put anything else on (alternator, power steering pump, a/c, or even the distributor) until we have the headers on. looks like additional cursewords will be used here also.

4th would be the slave cylinder......I see they are kinda cheap.....if I recall, about $40. I think we may do that. the little bit I could see of it last night looked terrible.

so, even though it seems we made alot of progress yesterday, we still have miles to go.

waiting for the boys to wake up so we could take a quick spin down to Rausch to see everyone

 

You guys are doing great. That is a reward in its self seeing it setting in its home.

As far as the slave cylinder. I changed mine on my falt bed 2 weeks ago and Im sure it was only $16 from Orielly. You can get a rebuild kit, but for a few dollars more you can get the whole assembly. Im sure it is the same as the 22re motors and trannys.

The transmission shaft is what will be a pain to get to line up with the pilot bearing. Around here we call it "Stabbing the transmission" should be called "Stabbing the pilot bearing". Something I do when connecting the to is go to Lowes and get some 5 inch or so bolts and when I have the engine and tranny within 3 or 4 inches I run them through mounting holes that go all the way through. Helps line up things and is there for safety as I do most by self. The ones I get are small enough that they will go through and not need threaded and put a nut on the back side that I can tighten as I go.

Cant help you on the starter and header. Havent pulled a 3.0, done some work on it, just never pulled one. Great job guys,it looking good and soon you will get to hear it.

went to Rausch....and back home. missed the boat to see the guys...got there right after 10am and they were already wheeling. walked around a bit, looked at some neat trail vehicles and some even neater Toyotas. was a nice ride and a good chance for my truck to stretch it's legs. at the end of the month, it gets parked, as it needs a list of things done before it can get inspected. we need to finish Joe's truck right away.

we are about 1/2'' or so away from getting the motor and tranny together...maybe less. I feel confident we will be able to do it well. the rest of the stuff is just gonna be a punch list of things to do.

Yes, the slave is not much... If you want a true Aisin, you know, just go to Dealerdirect or something... maybe worth a try(unless you're in a real hurry, then Napa for the Altrom, eh?)

Sorry to hear about all the tight squeezes.....but GET IT RIGHT, first time, .......I would know, right? lol. No, but seriously, especially for you with that tighter fit, ...don't wanna be 'squeezing' THINGS in and out of that engine bay unless it's for maintenance YEARS later, right? lol.

PS> I had that issue with my Trans/Engine line up.... And YES, starting the bolts and then slowly seating them was the trick. It pulled those two right together, ya know?
