Its been a busy week with little red getting spoiled some more. Once again huge thanks to Cody and Craig from Badland for their tireless work this week. You guys are amazing!
22. Custom rear tire carrier with Hi-Lift mount & jerry can mount (Badland Metal Manufacturing Custom)

23. 4th & 5th gear are going out on transmission (remove and replace)
24. Violent shuddering when leaving first gear especially on inclines (remove and replace clutch, flywheel, clutch cover, pilot bearing, and throwout bearing - Marlin HD 1,200 lb kit)
Tackled the transmission/clutch job this weekend. Took me about 16 hours all told with a 14 hour day on Saturday and another 2 hours on Sunday. It appears my issue was in the flywheel as the pictures above show. I'd love to hear from you guys about what the likely cause was for the flywheel to look like that.
I put all the new parts in including the low mileage used transmission/transfer case I picked up a few weeks back. Everything is working however I did find some aluminum paste/metal when draining the low mileage transmission. My father in law says it is normal especially considering the mileage on it. He thinks that the guy probably never drained it and it is the original fluid and the paste and metal is likely from the synchros. I put some cheap gear oil in it for this week to kind of act as a flush. I plan on draining it this upcoming weekend and putting Red Line MT-90 in at that point. I'm not sure if its the new clutch/flywheel or the cheap fluid I've got in it right now but shifting does feel a little strange in comparison to before. It almost feels like I'm shifting through quicksand (the best analogy I can come up with). There is no problem getting into gear in any of the gears it just doesn't feel as tactile as before. I'm guessing it is due to the cheap gear oil. I guess I will find out when I drain it and put the Red Line in.
The main issue that prompted all this work has been resolved which has me stoked. The problem of violent shuddering when leaving 1st gear is gone!

Thanks man. I am worried that I might have screwed the pooch in my departure angle with the Jerry can holder however. I guess I will find out soon enough. Its been a long winter of pouring money into this thing. I'm ready to wheel it now.

Regarding your departure angle, its hard to find a good balance between having lots of bumper storage and keepin the departure angle. I've had a couple different spare tire carrier designs in the works but haven's settled on one that i'm happy with cuz of that very thing. I like my back window too much and i'm reluctant to give it up, but gotta have the tire high enough to clear obstacles.... I'm trying to design an adjustable one.... with a "road" height and a "trail" height. we'll see how far that design gets.

The color-matched removable fiberglass top is original and sits over the factory 4-point roll bar. Factory alloys wheels are wrapped in all-terrain BF Goodrich tires. Note the clean chrome trim on the window surrounds, wheel arches, and rockers. Glass is all original with Toyota markings, and original mud flaps remain.
The seller says the interior is completely original save for a recovered passenger side seat cover on the bottom. We love the factory auxiliary gauge cluster with altimeter and level readings, and it is great to see the original radio, steering wheel, and factory transfer case warning sticker still in place.
The dash is free of cracks and the headliner fits tightly and looks very clean. The seller says everything on the car works including A/C, rear wiper, electric rear window, and the rear window defrost.
The original 22RE 4-cylinder features electronic fuel injection and provides good power sent through a Toyota 5-speed gearbox with 2-speed Hi/Lo transfer case. The seller has addressed several maintenance items including 4 new shocks, new exhaust from the cat back, and new spark plugs. It is freshly serviced with synthetic fluid in all the cases, replaced oil and filters, new antifreeze, and new wiper blades. Sale includes full service history, original window sticker, and manuals.[img]
