Well funny you asked that. I’m in the process of pulling a 1UZ from a 93 SC400 and acquiring parts for a tune up and engine refresh. This will be a long term project.

I will more more than likely start a new back half tube bed and rear 4 link first. My buddy runs a local shop and will more than likely build most of the back half for me since he does awesome work. This will be a winter-ish project though.

And I do agree, I sometimes miss the simplicity of the past version when it was street legal and on 37s with duals. It’s gone way beyond that now though ha ha .

1UZ time

I finally got the new power plant into the garage after pulling it from the donor over the past couple of weeks. It’s from a 92 SC 400. The transmission will get pulled off first and I will pillage the parts off of it that I need to swap onto my current A340. Then the motor will get cleaned up and tuned up. It won’t happen fast but it will get started sooner or later.

Back half and rear 4 link

I’m still working on the 1UZ but in the meantime....
its back half and 4-Link time. I dropped it off at a buddy’s shop and he is going to do the design and tube bending with my help. The back half will have room for my tools, fuel cell and a cooler. The 4 link will consist of some Artec brackets and truss, Rockwell Offroad 1.25 heims and some 16” Fox coilovers from Accutune Offroad. Pretty excited about this phase of the build.

While the truck is out of the garage, I am working on a set of half doors to help keep some of the dirt out. I sourced a roof and a pillars to swap on to the truck as well. I’ll add a halo and some A pillar protection in the form of some tube to help protect it. This will allow me to be a windshield in as well.

The half doors look good cut that way. I've always thought the one with the window surrounds left on.

doors do look good, for some reason I like having a frame on the half doors...dunno why but I will go that route when I make them for my 4Runner

How come you are gonna replace the roof and pillars? if you go that far seems like a cab swap would be just as easy..

Well funny you mention that. I have sourced an 86 Extra cab that I traded a 4L60 Transmission for. Sold the half doors and and a bunch of other stuff that was in the way.

I have scrapped the 1UZ pipe dream and sold it to a buddy who is throwing it into a 2003 reg cab Tacoma. I got the rear back half finished and have been wheeling it pretty hard.

I bought a 5.3 LM7 and Turbo 400 that I was contemplating putting in this truck but may just start from scratch on a complete new build. Looking at forced induction for the the current 22re, either Turbo Propane or turbo/aftermarket fuel management.
Its just a lot easier to package and there is no reason replacing an engine that runs just fine.

Next round of dropping $$$ on the Crawler

So I had a little unexpected maintenance that needed to be addressed.

4 of the 8 steering studs were broken off in the stock KP knuckles.

So I ordered some Reid Racing beef, ARP steering studs, Spicer knuckle studs and a set of Solid drive flanges. the knuckle will be blasted and powder coated red.

I’m also going to try and lower the suspension about 4 inches. The cab will be coming off from the firewall back and will be replaced with a tube frame and aluminum roof. Lots of work ahead....

Well I got everything back together. I got the knuckles powder coated in a wrinkle red. I’m not too fond of orange.

I changed my mind yet again on a new motor. Had a buddy let this 2RZ go for a great price and decided to start building it since it will mate up to my A340.
Rear Sump conversion, PSC TC pump, new Delphi Ignition coils, new alternator, new seals, gaskets and hardware.

This truck is bad ass!
How are you liking the turbo 2RZ and what is the biggest difference you notice in drive-ability vs the 22RE?
Obviously you have more power but has it been as good for wheeling?
What did you have to do for motor mounts/fitment?

I've only had it out once and it was so much better than the tired 22re. The power is there and it spools pretty quickly. now it wants to drive through the brakes so I guess I need to address that.

Taking it out again Thursday to test it a bit more.

Got the first set of 40/13.5/17 Interco SX2 stickies and a new set of Vision bead locks. Going to see how they like the TX granite at K2 this coming weekend at the Lonestar Landcruiser Roundup.
