Hey terry... I guess the sequester is working for you then... good to hear you get to stay home with the fam. this time... who knows though with the way that nutter in NK is carrying on a trip to the peninsula may be in your future... sad to say...

more amps are always better then less amps... the tiny 80 amp they put in this thing was barely enough to meet the demand in stock form... you can see the difference on the volt meter and light brightness the extra 10 amps makes... everything runs better... before if I had the radio on, the heater fan on and the lights on you could tell when I hit the turn signals the fan would increase and decrease with the blinking... now it carrys the load with a lot less complaints and I don't have any extra lights ... yet... before any one says I need a bigger battery I already have a big 1000CCA tow truck batt. installed... and that bad boy is serious... i can leave the lights on all day in winter and still crank up with no issue... lol

Camrys are good cars from all I hear... if you are wanting to pull the big 100A alt. you need to grab one from a 3VZFE engine model which was from the early-mid 90s.
You should know however that you will need to change the belt pulley on it to the one from your current 80A alt. and that these things are usually practically welded on by now and you often end up damaging the pulley in removing it.
Good luck...

Hey Terry.
Thanks for the kudos, but I'm still the village idiot when it comes to the

However I will help you as much as I can. I'm still chasing a rough idle and intermittent power loss on mine.
It seems like it should be an easy fix, but it's been complicated. lol
But I still like mine it keeps me thinking.
Let me know when you get one.

Hello aviator... I got one year an one month to go and then I am going to hang it up. I hope that nut cake doesnt get to carried away over there. I have been in the hot spots 6 times and it is getting harder each time. That is a young mans game of getting ready to go over there and doing what is need to be done. My old butt is just isnt as strong as it used to be.

Having that large of a CCA battery is something well worth the investment. I have always bought the biggest I can find and never had a problem in sub zero tempertures. I have been told that I dont need that big of a battery, but just for winter time it well worth the extra.

There are so many Camrys in the yards here. One slavage gets $250 for a short block and $1000 for a long block. Yards are full of water so I havent got to do any looking like I would like to. Want to see about if it is something I could work on. There isnt one 3vz in the yards at all.

Hello ksti.. I have seen you answer several questions on the 3.0 and have always had great answers. I try to answer questions when I can on the homepage but when it comes to a 3.0 I dont have any suggestions.

My second Toyota was a 91 SR5 Runner 3.0 5 speed. What a great truck, I really liked it. One day I was under neath it and the rust had gotten to it that was beyond my repair. Under the rear seats, carpet was keeping the elements out. It came from Minnesota and the frame was barely together. This was before I new what to look for. The 3.0 is a high mileage motor. One thing that still shocks me on how Aisian models double or triple the mileage compared to domestics.

Hello kornhuskerwizard.. I am hoping to get a chance to find out about Camrys. I am starting to see if they are something I want to get into. It may get put on hold for awhile though. I am going to paint an 86 extra cab and now I have an 87 Runner that the same owner wants me to go thru for him. I seen a guy that I went to school with and he his wanting me to repair his 88 pickup for him. I have been looking on Camry forums and trying to learn some about them.

I took the block to the machine shop today. He said it will be a couple of weeks before he will have it done. They are backed up quite a bit.

I have been trying to get the bed bolts and bumper off. A PO has 5/8, 14 mm, 17mm bolts and some other sizes. I have most of the bolts off to remove the bed, but I do have a couple that I cant get to with a cutoff wheel so am hoping that some more soaking will loosen them up. I want to pull the tank to repair the drain plug and to clean the tank as well.

I did come across some uncut door panels. Mine have speaker holes in them and are full length. The ones I got are half panels. Great shape just need cleaned up. Even if I cant or dont use them on this truck, it is nice to have a good set available. If they wont work, Grego has a nice write up on door panels.

Weather is supposed to be alot better after tomorrow so I am hoping to get started on the several different things I do have to get them done. Should be one busy summer and things will start to move quick once I get things going.

Great door panels I found out of a camper. Someone beat me to the door seals or I would of grabbed them too.

I go pick up my block Thursday or Friday. The machine shop called and says it is done. I had to have the crank ground 10 thousandths and the piston bore is now 20 thousandths over. I was hoping not to have to get into that much machine work, but atleast now I will have a good block to work with.

The engine will slow some of the build down as I need to save up and order the parts that I dont have that are oversized now. This wont really slow it down awhole lot as I still working on getting the bed off. We had snow just the other day and now the weather is supposed to be getting better in the next few days. Will have to wait and see.

I either have no parts or 10 parts of the same thing. I got a complete door with electric windows and a panel for the other and no door. I may be getting the parts for the other door here soon if all goes as planned. I may be getting a parts runner that has the other door parts I will need. Still deciding if I want to add electric to it. Truck isnt going to cost me anything but the cost of going to get it.

Normally it wouldnt be a problem, but I have had to put tires on my 3rd gen runner and my wifes truck, and a few other hundred things that kept coming up, and she is done working until school starts again next fall Still havent told her about my new parts truck. She is ready to see if my old rusted up 84 parts truck go to its new owner here soon and then I have another one to take it place. hehehe

More new door panels. Still deciding if I want electric windows. They must be having a special on tan parts.

I also got 2 great condition dashpads. One for my 86 and one for this truck. One has a hairline crack at the front of the pad, other then that, both are perfect.

Supposed to have some great weather and if all goes well, somehow I plan on getting the bed off of my truck. 3 bolts just wont budge and are starting to strip. I want to get the bed off and get the gas tank out and get it cleaned up. Want to start getting the frame cleaned and painted and get started on getting the bodywork done on the bed. If all goes as planned, should have some nice progress in the next few days, but we know how plans go.

Nice score on the door panels and dash pads, those look like they're in really good shape. Power windows would be a nice option to have, sometimes I wish I would have shopped around more before I purchased my 4runner and bought a SR5, then I wouldn't have to/want to do so much upgrades, lol. Nice work as always Terry, look forward to seeing more pics of your progress!

Thanks Ed.. I have only seen a couple of SR5 myself, some of the fun is doing the upgrades, but not all are possible. I am still kicking my self in the butt for a fully loaded SR5 85 Runner for $500. Need a motor and a few other things. Knowing what I know now, I would of been all over it. Never seen one as loaded as it was.

Havent been able to do much on the 85. We had some snow earlier this week and I am trying to get the 86 extra cab ready for paint. I did get to pick up my block, rods and crank. Rods and crank are 10 thousandths over and the bore is 20 thousandths over. Was hoping to avoid alot of machine work but since this truck is going to be a keeper. I will spend the extra on it. Will be looking at Engbldr and slowly accumalte the parts I will need. Hope I just need to get the pistons, rings and bearings for the bottom end. I have most of everything else.

Slowly building up the parts.

Thanks Cyberhorn... I will be glad when it is in the truck, but the truck isnt ready for it any ways so it should work out fine when it does come together. The truck is going thru an explosion before it goes in. The weather is warming up and I still havent gotten to mess with getting the bed off and I am hoping the cab isnt as difficult as the bed has been. I want the frame looking purty as well and also want to use this thread to show how to do frame and body swaps when this build is completed. It is going slower then I would like but it will happen.

Thanks kornhuskerwizard... I do have a '01 4Runner SR5. I bout it in Feburary '04 with 30,000 miles on it and can say it has been a fantstic truck. I have changed the O2 sensors and a coil pack and one time I was over seas the wife had the belt Timing Belt changed and I think that is all I have ever had to do to it other then basic maintaince.

I have had to put new tires on it and got it alighned and one of the lower tie rods had to be replaced just because it was frozen. I cant fuss as it just need the tires and tierod and really have never had to do anything to this truck. It now has 177,000 miles on it. I did have to replace the rear bumper as the wife backed into a pole with it.

I have had seat covers on it since day one and other then the carpet needing a good shampooing from this past winter, it has very little wear and tear since I first bought it. If these trucks are taken care of they will run along time and hold up really well. It has the 3.4 automatic tranny and I would of liked to had a manual tranny, the automatic is a great setup as well.

There is the Limited Edition but I like the SR5 just because it has cloth seats. It took me awhile to find this one as it was what I wanted at the time and I really like this little truck.

I was a die hard American cars fan until I got this Toyota. It was my first Japanese car I had ever owned and my repair payments went away when I bought this truck and what started me on my road to Toyotas. I would get a domestic car paid off and it would start breaking down and I would have to buy another car. I really feel that owning a good dependable made car will pay for itself in the long run and this one has.

I havent had carpayments in 7 years and it has allowed me to do alot of other things that carpayments would of affected. This truck is as stock as the day it rolled off of the assembly line and I really do like it, but my heart is in the older trucks. My dad was just over here in his new to him 2011 Nissan ( cant remember what it is) and he was pround of it and it is a nice car. I think he would like to see me in newer cars, but I truly enjoy building my own to the way that I like them and dont feel as though I am driving something that looks like everything else out there.

As much as I love my little 3rd gen, my 88 Runner and 86 Runner mean more to me then the newer ones. Other then the seats in my 88 Runner (which will get reupholstered someday) everytime I get to drive it, I really do feel like I am driving a one or two year old car. My 86 Runner and this truck will be just as nice and dependable when done.

3rd Runner.. 3Runner... I need to get one more so I can have a 4thRunner...lol

I wouldnt normally get excited about broken bolts, but these are on the bed and they can get pretty rusty. I have soaked them in 3 different rust dissolvers and several times and they still wouldnt loosen. Today I got the cheater bar and a breaker bar and got them off.

The one on the right is a bed bolt. I have broken sevral of these in the past. If they dont break and the tab bends up where it cant hold the bolt still, then you hope you got enough room to get a cutoff wheel in between the bed and the bolt head. Luckily this didnt happen to me this time but it has in the past.

Bed is ready to come off, just need to get the parts I have stored in back that I have already cleaned up and set a side for this truck. I am wanting to pull the bed and eventually the cab, but for now I want to get the gas tank out before it gets to much warmer. As it is now I will have fumes and that is something I dont care for as the fumes are what can be dangerous.

I try to mention in each of my build threads about how bad the tanks can get in these and I am sure this one will be no different. If nothing else for the peace of mind knowing it is in great condition when done.

These broken bolts are actually a good thing. 2 weeks of working on these. I normally have patience on stubborn bolts, but did get tired of the hold up.
