My First Truck Build (81)

Well guys I found a new hobby. I put a new motor in a little toyota that I traded a buddy for about 6 months ago and fell in love with these little trucks. Instead of tearing up that truck i ran across a project and picked it up. Here are some pics of the progress so far. Let me know what you think. This is my first time to ever do anything like this. My background is in racing motorcycles and after a bad wreck I decided to find a more family/body friendly hobby.

Enough with that.. Heres the pics so far

The Day I Got It

Parts for new frame and a Pic of the truck that i fixed up for a DD

Working of new frame

Day 2

This is a high as we could get the jacks without them falling still have more travel

End of day 2

Day 3

Day 4

Thats it so far. We will be working on it some more this weekend. Ill update with pics next week

Well guys i have bad news. I got to tearing the interior out of the truck to see how bad the rust was and come to find out it was so bad that what looked to be a floorboard was someone half assed attempt to patch the GIANT holes with fiberglass. Neither of the front body mount bolts were through metal the were just caked over with fiberglass. Well after talking with my wife (financial manager) we have decided to turn our two trucks into one. As much as i like the fist gen cab i dont have the time or experience to put in a whole new floor (rust as all the was up to the lower dash) in it so its got to go.

The plan is now to put my brand new 22re performance motor from my other truck into this frame along with the w56 trans. We will then move the body mounts on the 1st gen frame to match up with our third gen cab. Then we will sand and grind one the frame so we can prime it and paint it. After that we with take our ifs trucks hub and put them on the 81 same with the front brakes so we can move the 81 front brakes to the rear. Later on ill move the ifs rear axle over but for now will run wheel spacers.

Pulled the truck into the garage running under its own power last night and now it looks like this tonight. (A huge thanks to my wife for all the help.... she went Tasmanian devil on that truck with me taking things apart)

sorry to hear about the cab ...
dont know if this will help at all .. but we ( http://toyotafiberglass.com ) are building a NEW replacement cab for this generation .. will have 3 different options avaliable from just a cab "shell" (no floor) for buggies , to a complete replacement including a roll cage if needed

.

That sounds awesome... I'm sure they're WAAAYYYYY out of my (and OP's) budget though.

That does sound pretty sweet. But as stated above i think that will be out of my budget for a rock crawler plus i dont think rocks and fiberglass like each other very well. But i will definitely keep you in mind if i ever get the funds to build me a DD mall crawler

Beat me to it ^^ anyway here is a link below.

The locks look like the "MADE IN USA" diybeadlocks.com kit.
http://www.diybeadlocks.com/ProductD...ade%2Din%2DUSA
Wheels could be anything. I'm gonna go through that site when I get my locks to weld on.

What size wheel? I'm thinking about doing a 15 x 9 with a diy kit, but going with the interlink ring.

I think they are 16x10? We have the ring layout saved so now the guy i bought the truck from can cut out any design i want on the CNC just have to bring him the metal. Im trying to come up with something cool.

Well after moving the body mounts and making some rear frame adjustments we decided to do a test fit. Motor and tranny fit great and it looks like i wont need a body lift to go flat belly. Still lots of work to go but im liking it. Need to finish some welding then its off to powder coat for the frame

Well im still waiting on all my axle and transfer case parts so in the mean time to keep me busy i went and bought a winch and thought i would build a bumper. Well the other day i swung by my local 4wd shop to look around and a jeep bumper caught my eye. I asked for a tape measure and took some measurements and thought i might be able to make it work on my yota. Well after a few hours of fab time this is what i came up with. Looks kinda funny without the fenders but i think it will be sweet when the truck is all put together.
