Ordered Me a voltage reader to do the mod on last page of this thread:

Here is the part:
Also found this one:
This will help me keep track of my system since my charge light isn't functional due to the GM alt install. FTW!

Thanks. I have a bearing that that either went out or is about to because it is noisy as anything under my hood. I assume it is the idler pulley/tensioner bearing but will look into it more soon. Anyone know where to get just the bearing?

New lights:

The round off road lights make me want to do a headlight conversion to the 79' round lights.[/quote]
Those look like the SAME lights that came on the front bumper of my truck. Mine are not wired yet. Other priorities
One of the bezels is bent on mine, but it doesn't seem to matter. Also, one bulb is missing. I need to wire them up.
Nice build thread. I need to start one.

This help? The video I found after I did mine.
Youtube video...
My Power Steering Pulley is a little noisey so thought I would show how to replace the bearing. I used PN# 204-FF.

Then I removed the nut and the pulley. On the backside there is a wire clip that holds the bearing to the pulley. Remove it,
then I used a 3/4 inch socket and drove it out over a vice.
I put a little oil in side the pulley and used the vice and slowly worked it back in most of the way. Once it is flush with
the pulley I used another socket to finish getting it all the way in so as the wire clip would seat.

Here it is all cleaned and painted. The bearing was $22. Toyota wants to sell the whole assembly. I was unable to
find just the pulley. Hope this helps someone.

^^^ Thanks a lot Terry! I looked up that part number and found it on RockAuto.com as like a wholesale closeout item on sale for $11 shipped. Local O'Rielly has it for $25 but I'm in no rush do it. To much to do at work right now and with the holidays there isn't much Yota time lol so Im content with ordering it and saving $15. Preciate the write up I will def use it when the time comes

Well got some problems with the truck. Its making this awful sound of a bearing going out still and its gotten worse. I started the truck tonight and was gonna drive to the store and I decided to try out my voltage reader that plugs in the cigarette outlet. I plugged in and the voltage was going all over the place. I saw it get as low as 11V and up to 13.5V and also noticed to headlights dimmed once like the alt dropped out or something. Im starting to think the alt is going bad or already has and thats where all this noise is coming from. I know Sarajevo had this same problem also. The pulley on the alt is maybe like a 1/8" off alignment from the other and I think it jacked up the alt pulling on it like that. But also the alt kinda shakes where its stands off so much so my bracket is a POS lol.
But I had anticpated this and told santa I wanted a Trail Gear GM to Toyota alt bracket for x-mas and he was kind enough to give it to me early lol
. Probably go ahead and exchange my alt for a new one and get it installed. Gonna have to order me some cable to run from the battery to the alt since Im putting back in its stock location. Makes me feel better that it will be done properly and not rigged. But building that bracket I made was fun and a good learning experience I think.

GM 1 wire is almost the best mod you can do to a 1st gen. I did it a while back. I made my own lower bracket and modded the top bracket. i went threw 2 alt and 1 voltage reg before i did the swap. Never looking back.

Well I had some motivation to work on my truck today. Pulled the idler pulley off and took out the old bearing. It was really noisey. Then went to local shop and paid them $10 to press in the new bearing for me. I didnt wanna risk messing it up. also removed the alt bracket I made and mounted the trail gear one and got the alt on it. Put the pulley off the stock alt on instead of the I ordered a while back. Spun the fan on it and it appears to just barely clipping the bracket so Im gonna put the fan from the stock alt on it since its slightly smaller in diameter. Gonna have to get a new belt. Looks like one maybe an inch longer will work. Ordered a longer batt cable too and it should be in this coming week.

Got the alternator finished. Old belt was 35" per autozone's measurement and I ended up using a 36 1/2" belt. Everything is working good. No more grinding sound with the new idler pulley bearing in.
