83Toyota88's 1983 Pickup Build-Up Thread

Computer logged me off.
Thanks, it is always nice to see one that is going to similar to what you are be building. It kind of sets a goal for you. My spray gun is really a cheapie. I dont think I have spent more then $40 for one. On my 88 truck build, several of them trucks are painted with the old style suction type gun. I think I only paid $20 for that type of gun. I like the gravity feed and it came with a detail gun (small cup).
I used Nasson paint and got mine from Oriellys. That paint job is a base coat/ clear coat and cost $250 for the paint and clear coat. If you can spray with a rattle can, you can spray with a gun. Nothing to be to worried about. Setting the gun up is the hardest part. The first time I asked a body shop to set my spray pattern for me and it worked out great.
Spraying base coat has never been a problem for me and you hear all of the horror stories on painting. I think that was the old acylic enamel. You can shoot acrylic alot cheaper but I would strongly suggest bc/cc. The problems I do run into is shooting the clear coat. It will like to run and I have had it to orange peel badly. But that is nothing to be worried about. You just have to do alot of wet sanding with 2000 grit paper.
On the last 3 I have painted, I used a sealer over the primer. It is welllll worth the money for the sealer before putting on the paint. It gives you a final chance to fix flaws before the paint goes on and gives so much better results.
I am not a professional painter. I have done 8 trucks and each one gets better. I shoot for 100% perfection and usually only get in the 90's%, at least it is better then what I started with. Really nothing to be worried about. Nasson is a cheaper brand of Dupont if I understand right.
It really is in the body work. A great paint job wont fix bad body work, but a good bodywork will fix a bad paint job. I just jumped in and did it. When you start priming and doing your body work, use your priming technique to practice painting. Any questions feel free to ask. Getting one to paint and painted is quite rewarding for me.

I sprayed Jasons truck https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...5/index38.html and not sure where he got his paint. It turned out really well. He could give you information on where he bought his. He is probably 2 hours east of you. There are several brands, but I like to get mine from Orielly and Nasson. There are more expensive paints out there, ALOT more, whewww.

Body work is not as bad as most make it sound, I never rely on my eyes I always just feel it out...Lol...one thing you can do to help feel the dent or high spot is to use a terry clothe under your hand over the top of the body panel you are doing the work on. and when you think you have it close you have probably went to far...LOL....you can also dry spray some primer or black paint over the area and then wet sand it with fine sand paper 600 or so on a block and it will show you the low and high spots. Don't be afraid to use a hammer and dolly on the metal just don't stretch it I have still not figured out how to shrink metal after I have stretched it. Also good blocking or filling primer goes a long ways on the final coat weather its single stage or bc/cc. When I spray two stage paint it always looks like to me like its too dry but it always comes out good, for clear I always spray a light tack coat first it will look like dry spray but that always helps me keep from running my first coat of clear, remember on clear squeeze the trigger before you get to the panel, keep moving (quick pace) and don't let off the trigger until your gun is pointed off the other edge of the panel. I usually do a couple of light coats of clear and then for my final I will lay it on as heavy as possible with out it running. This was my first bc/cc paint job! 95*f and 90% humidity. no paint booth well kinda I made a plastic room and stuck a squirrel cage fan blowing out. Oh yeah clear coat is sticky as heck! Practice spraying on pc of card board standing up and laying down that will also let you learn how to set up the gun.

just depends are you gonna use a tubing bender or use angled cuts to make the bends? I cant say it would look good or not but I do think you can get regular tubing from a welding shop as cheap as Gas pipe...

hey mn terry told me about your thread. trucks looking good. I still gathering parts for my 83 [wouldnt be interested in parting with your old box would ya lol]. Are want your roll bar for looks or protection? If its just for looks and a place to mount lights what about somthing lighter like exaust pipe or somthing similar you might even get a shop to bend it for ya cheap and the just weld it together just a thought.

Exactly what are you referring to as a box? My old truck bed? If so I am probably going to use a couple of sections of it to fix on the new one where there is body damage. And plus the sections I'm not using have really big rust holes (I can put my hand through some of them) so you wouldn't really want it anyways.
Also if you are fixing up an 83 I have a thread in the Pre-84 trucks section where you can download an entire FSM free for an 83 pickup.

Put my front bumper and winch back on today and mounted my two 100 watt off road lights. Didn't wire them up yet.
Here are my bumper mounts if anyone ever needs an idea to make some:

Where they mount:

How they mount:

New lights:

The round off road lights make me want to do a headlight conversion to the 79' round lights.
