1986 Toyota 4WD Wheel Recommendations

Hey!

I've been driving Toyota's for a while, but recently helped my little sister purchase a 1986 Toyota Pickup for her first car. It's in pretty good shape, but the original white steel wheels are looking pretty rough. I'm looking for recommendations for wheels that would fit the truck. I'd really like to buy some new take-offs from a 2018 or 2019 Tacoma and use those, but I'm not sure if they'll fit. If any body has any experience using these wheels on a similar year truck, I'd love to hear them and see pictures. Here's a picture of the new truck in the driveway after a lot of cleaning and waxing, etc.

Here's my Tacoma with some 2017 Off Road wheels mounted on it. I'd like to use the same or similar wheels for her pickup:

Thanks for your help! I know very little about Toyotas of this year, but I'm looking forward to learning.

Welcome!

I am not sure if those wheels will fit.

I actually love those steel wheels. They complete the utilitarian look to these old Toyotas.

I know that there have been new OEM wheels on older trucks threads in the past, not sure if any are up to date with 2018-2019 wheels though.

Both trucks look great!

I like the utilitarian look of the pickup overall, but after 33 years there's not enough scrubbing that can be done to get the wheels back to white.

We might paint the wheels silver or black for the time being, but having more tire options available with 16 inch wheels would be nice too.

Why not try pulling one of your rims and seeing if it fits on hers? Seems like the easiest solution to get a firm answer.

Those stock steelies look great! I would leave them on there, at the most pull them off and give them a fresh coat of paint. These trucks are more sought after in 100% stock condition than anything else!

If anything, get a set of early alloys. Hard to find a clean set with centercaps.

I'm not a fan of people putting newer generation wheels on older trucks.

O.P. can fit up to 31-inch Outside Diameter tires without any mods.
However:
1) Newer trucks typically have 16 or 17 inch rims.
2) Given same O.D., bigger rim usually means heavier overall weight and more expensive rubber.

I've been working for the National Park Service, but I'm based out of far Northern California. Made a trip down to Joshua tree in January and had a great time. It should be beautiful in the spring!

Good eye on the FJ in the back! A few years ago it would have been GM vehicles, but I'm a firm believer in Toyota now.

We decided to stick with the stock steel wheels. We'll paint 'em white or silver again when we've got some time and the weather improves.

I liked the newer wheels/tires cause I picked my set up off craigslist for $500 for all 4 wheels and tires, but I think you guys raise some good points about keeping this truck stock.

Great to be working outdoors!
Anza-Borrego wildflower bloom is beautiful right now. We're also considering going up to Carrizo Plains for wildflower/camping/offroad trip.

BTW, The 4-spoke rims, I think from second-gen 4Runner SR5, are also 15 inches but have an offset that puts the wheels out a little further, but very subtle. Looks similar to one I saw on a Land Cruiser online...
Yes, I plan to leave the center cap off and simply paint the center black, because I don't like having non-essential things on the truck that are just likely to come off and litter the trails.

Wow what an amazing looking 1986 yota!! I’ve looked for years and never see anything that original/ that nice. I did find a decent 1990 but not as nice as that one which looks to be all original paint and all.

Make sure to check those tires

So I bought some 1993 Tacoma 17 inch rims with tires. Yet I just had my tire pass me on the freeway. Since this wonderful virus is the hit right now, I’m walking down the freeway as my 1986 Toyota pickup goes to my boss’s house. Make sure whatever you do you really inspect those tires when you upgrade. Mine will take 18 inch rims with no rubbing issues. 20 inch was just too much, though I don’t have a lift on it at all.

Yea I have 4 new tires that I’ll be getting installed when this shutdown is over, my front pass tire is looking pretty bad right now. The rest are wearing fairly normal while the one is cupping badly. Every other lug sticks up high. This is on a Mickey Thompson Baja mtz.

18 inch? 20 inch? Are you taking this offroad? Those rims would put less cushioning between the road and your suspension, making rhe ride rougher.

Looks like he said his are 17” off of a 93 Tacoma? Never hear of them putting 17” on a 93 pickup, and the Tacoma came in 95. I’m running 15” Mickey Thompson wheels myself.

Those wheels (not rims) are from a 2005 or newer Tacoma (or possibly a 4Runner, not sure).

How old are those tires?
