Well finally...

Picked up a '91 1.6 TD - price was just right (diesel for the truck to haul it home), previous owner apparently decided to replace the IP - and it wouldn't start after So my buddy the vw diesel guru is coming by this weekend to get it running - and start us down the road to ~ 120hp. Then we start work on swapping it into the 87... Still trying to find a way to control the A340H without having to go full manual control...

Either way, very cool swap. Keep us all updated with progress!
You cannot comprehend the hundreds and hundreds of tons of salt road crews dump on the road here in Ontario to de-ice the roads. It's safe, yes, but chews through unprotected vehicles in fewer than just seven years. It's a gearhead's nightmare. Even a just a light dusting of snow leaves everything salt-covered the next day.

Just out of curiosity (want to get some parts on order) and the local toyota shop wasn't helpful...

On the 2nd gen's with the 2LT engine - anyone know the toyota part #'s for the fuel filter(s) & filter mount/adapters? Would like to keep toyota parts right up until things hit the VW engine (just so I don't have to sit and wonder which part came from who).

My garage smells like diesel suddenly - I like it! I really Like it!

check out www.toyodiy.com there's a parts list there for nearly every toyota produced world wide. For diesel engines it is best to search Europe or Japan you might not find it in NA listings.

andy, you need to start a build up thread so we can all follow your progress. this thread is great, but starting a new thread would widen the tech knowledge base on this swap.

I'll be starting a thread soon enough - still collecting parts for the moment & getting the VW diesel running properly prior to swapping... There's going to be a ton different with mine - given i'm going to keep the auto (which will turn into a headache I'm sure).

Found the inline filter; and the water separator - just need the mount for the separator now... Of course now you've muddied the waters - separator c/w heater element... p/n 23303 - That should help the cold starts...

Aviator - if you ever pass through calgary -let me know - I owe you a beer for that website

Hey back -- I've been around here fairly regularly I just don't post as much as some. Check out the FJ forum. I almost bought one last fall but bailed. I may buy one in the future used despite the visibility being an issue. Still a great truck mechanically. Btw, I'm still running the same old '94 but it's running really really strong. The 4.88s have a lot to do with it but the 3VZE's never run stronger. Sounds strange but for a 3-slow, it's really good. I've driven this truck since '96. Maybe it's the fresh cat. converter and Bosch O2 sensor. Okay, okay, off-topic, but I figured I'd sneak it in here.

Veedubs don't use the typical block heater; most have at best a glued on oilpan warmer... Really you need to find an old school hydronic heater (the ones that plumb into your coolant heater lines) to have these effectively start in really cold weather.

Or park it in a heated space

Speaking of hydronic heaters here's a link to one you might consider http://www.espar.com/html/applications/automotive.html

I know this is WAY after the fact and all, but Block heater are surprisingly easy to come by.
I don't know how well it works yet, but I ordered a heated dipstick for my step-father to use in his air plane. He says they work good, but hadn't been able to find one in years.

I was sorry to see your project go away, hopefully your new endever is working out better for you. : )
Happy holidays

The espars are nice - but... Zoiks - you're talking 1200$

Many of the older 70s early 80s imports had them installed by the dealers; fairly easy to find in the wreckers... Many of the older domestic diesel trucks got them also - and given they're intended to feed a big v8 diesel - they're almost overkill...

Yeah it kinda sucks to see this one being done and over with... I guess I better get off my tookus with my build so we've got another one running on the board

$1200 zoinks!... you might try a heavy truck wrecker... you can probably find one off a roadkill for less than that...
maybe even gov't auctions the forces surplus stuff like this all the time it's just a huge pita to go through the surplus auction website since you have to check the auctions at almost every base separately.
