Zombie there is a company in Mississauga that imports engines and engine/tranny sets from Japan direct... they are used but typically with less 80K on them. They have the 3.0L diesels with tranny and brainbox/harness etc. [basically a drop in set up] for around 2500.00+/- , engines only for about 1700.00. I think I still have the linky I'll check and post it if I find it..

30MPG is pretty sweet Flash.

That link would be great, anyone have an idea what a Toyota diesel gets for mileage? I am assuming that it would have plenty of grunt, especially for the hills.

dont mean to hijack but your thread is more active then mine
I started swapping out my auto for a 5-speed and I cant reuse my downpipe because the clutch fork is in the way. I was going down then under the transmission (like you), now I am forced to go accross the top of the transmission. It was kind of a PITA, clearance is tight everywhere. This is the best I can get, the only area I am concerned about is where it runs under the water outlet on the back of the head. The pipe is about 1/4" away from the rubber hose, if I use header wrap it will be about 1/8". Think that will be enough? The only other thing I can do is flatten the pipe a bit in that area, if I dont kink it it will not interupt the flow but the flattening may distort the pipe enough to cause interference issues somewhere else. Any thoughts?
I love the flatbed, might have to copy it...

Zombie. I've got a 3.0L Toyota TD in my 92 pickup and highway the best I have gotten was right around 30mpg. Around town right now its down to about 24 mpg but should get better as soon as I get my valves properly adjusted.

And Aviator I would be VERY interested in that link to that company that brings the motors in. I'm looking to get a 5 speed bellhousing for my diesel and that may be a great source for it. Maybe they can even get me a nice little diesel for a Corolla.

i think flash gas milage is great ....and the fact taht he pretty much invented a engine swap and did it on his own..

Zookie,
What size of pipe are you using? I would be very uneasy running th pipe on top because there is no wind or anything there. The heat will just sit there and heat the cab up. BUT if that is what you must do, I would pound the pipe away from the hose then wrap it like you said. You will be toasty warm in the winter. (man you got a lot of room behind your engine, must be nice)

Side note: How did you mark your TDC on you engine. I made some crapy marks on the balancer that matched a slot cut in the plastic timing belt cover (not very accurate and it is worrying me now). I want to make a better pointer and was wondering what you did? If I have a pump problem I am in a bit of trouble.

Thanks for hats off BigT

Aviator: How can I get a hold of this Shane Toyworks dude?

the pipe is mostly 2.25 but is 2" behind the head, I didnt want to go any smaller. The guys that install these in samurais run them this way, they dont seem to have a problem but have a little more room. I cant do down then under because the clutch fork and 2wd torque bar are in the way. I'll wrap it good and cross my fingers. I think it will be OK. I installed the engine forward a few inches in case I had to route it that way, couldnt go any further forward, I modified the oil pan as much as I could before getting too close to the oil pick-up.

Before I removed the timing mark I punched a mark on the cam, crank, intermedate and injector timing gears. I made a corrisponding mark on the timing belt. I counted the teeth and made the same marks on the new belt. When I put it back together I aligned the marks on the timing gears to the belt and everything lined up. I checked TDC when I had the head off and made a mark like you did and when I lined that up everything else was where it was supposed to be. I looked at it closely and determined that if I was a tooth off either way it wouldnt run right, 1 tooth is a couple degrees.
Have you had to time the injector yet? TDC just has to be close (not perfect), you have to rotate the engine around anyways a bit before you ajust the injector. I wouldnt worry about it.

Hi, Oh my god! This is amazing! I can't believe i've just found this 1.9 aaz swap thread & read it all in 3hrs!

Where are u exactly? i must come check out your truck in the next 2-3wks or so.

I was supposed to do this exact swap to my 91 22re/g58 last year too!

(Until my 1.9 blew up due to a blown headgasket caused by a waterpump & gauge cluster simutaneous failure. i even ended up selling the whole jetta for $350! Maybe i should have kept it... )

Anyway, GOOD WORK there rigging everything from ground up.

However, after hearing your results, i'm glad to find out now that 1.9 td sounds like it's going to be too powerless for my setup.

This is my "ToyMobile" setup in case you want to know what i'm talking about.
http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showfl...v=#Post1004430

At around 5000-5500lbs (load/ed), 4.88, 33" tires, what diesel options do i have left? (stock pickup = 3800lbs i think.)

-TDI
-toy diesel engine from japanese half-cuts (what's that import company again?)

My 350xxxkm 22re is starting to burn oil & too much $ into the atm now-a-days w/ our oil $. I NEED a diesel so bad to run it on WVO...

Allochris I think with looking at your vehicle setup you should look into the 3.0L toyota TD. I've got one in my truck and they have pulling power. Do some reasearch on the 1kz-te engine. I can't type anymore right now though gotta go to work.

I would say your best bet would be a Toy diesel like 82yota said. The 1.9 is good for milage and equals the 22re power but is working hard to do that. A TDI would be better but you are still talking under 2 liters of engine.

You could look at a 4BT swap. They are big, and heavy as $*it though. You are in the range of needing a full size truck.

Ya you could but you will have to build everything like I did. The 5 cylinder might fit as guys have put them in Jeeps. I don't think the 6 will fit though.

I'm pretty sure a guy that used to frequent the toyotadiesel.com site put a 5 cyl merc into his runner. I can't remember his name though. I think there are some pictures of it in the photogallery on that site though.

And Flash. How is the motor running? Is it liking the warmer weather? Once I cruise on the highway for a while and really get that intake air hot and the EGTs up she loses quite a bit of power. I just picked up my intercooler two days ago though so hopefully will get started on it this weekend and will be able to tell you how it goes. Hopefully will have a pyrometer on Friday as well so I can monkey with the boost a bit.

The engine is running great. I have put 3 more tanks of fuel through it with a consistent 30 mpg. I am thinking of the IC as well. If I am climbing a hill I can easily push the EGT;s over 1400f. I always keep my eye on that gauge.

I have a slight vibration still in the driveline. I think I may have fixed it last night and will see today when I drive it.

When I installed the engine/trans I aimed the output flange of the T-cast at the pinion yoke as I was planning on running a single drive shaft. Now that I am not the first shaft is running on an angle to the hanger bearing. I re-drilled the hanger bearing holes to move it over as far as I could. It is still to angled about 2 degrees but I am hoping that will fix it.

I only saw the vibration over 80 km/h and it came in about ever 1-1.5 seconds and only under load.

I am worried about my injection pump because the pulley is wobbling. I can't find anything wrong with the pulley and think it is the pump bearing that is going. No leaky though????

I have been driving the truck all over and am very confident in it now. I drove 800km in the last 2 days.

Not a big job anyway to put some new holes in the toy flywheel. I want this to be as much Toyota as possible too.
instead of using the MKII/MKIII style clutch, you can use a G60/ VR6 flywheel which mounts in a "regular" fashion, then have that redrilled for the 'yota PP.

This G60 "hybrid" clutch is what all of us TDi freeks use when we start changing nozzle tips and having the ECU's reflashed. My '99 TDi put out 120 HP/,410 tq/lbs at 2100 RPM at the last dyno day 2 years ago. This Hybrid clutch holds up fine with no increas in pedal effort. I'm seriously considering a TDi swap into my '92 xcab toyota PU. The "performance" and "economy" of the 3.0 is rediculous, but I like the truck, so some kind of engien swap is in order.

If anyone's looking to get an adapter made - I'm about to order up 2 from a local CNC plasma cutting shop. Estimated cost is 75$cdn each (+ shipping to you) can easily add to that order...
