4.0 v6 5speed swap

I have been looking around for a good swap to put into a truck (still looking for the right truck with a blown motor) and at first I settled on the 4.0 v8 from the lexus but I wanted to get the most efficient drivetrain behind it as well.

I like the automatics for crawling around in the bush and playing in the mud. I like IFS and will not be doing a SAS since I dont play in the rocks like people down on the big trails down south.

So the question I had was... has anyone done a lexus 4.0 v8 swap to a 5 speed automatic from a 4.7v8 drivetrain. I like the idea of an all aluminum motor with an economical drivetrain. I was thinking I could swap the whole transmission and transfercase and just make up a couple lightweight driveshafts.

Any thoughts?

ps... my other new toy is a 2003 v6 4runner. I cant wait to get good mpg again. (10.7L/100km or 22 US mpg/26.4 CAN mpg)

I forgot to mention... if the 1uz-fe isn't available I might go with a 4.0 v6 from the 2003 and up toyota's.

The transmission for the 2000-2004 Tundra 4x4 is the same as the Lexus LS400 (A340LE) but the problem is that the Tundra is a driver drop while the 4Runner / Pickup is a passenger drop.

The A340H /A340LE transmissions are both capable (I would go with the E if possible) depending on your year and budget you may already have a trans that will work just fine (the A340H).

I will be using my A340H until my adapter is finished (I'm in no hurry) but mileage is more important to me than comfort, so I am going with the R150F manual trans eventually.

EDIT: The 1GR is nice but nothing I would put in an older truck...

You're crazy man, that'd be a bad ass swap but a 3.4 seems so much more reasonable...

I was actually thinking about the 5 speed from the v8 version of the 4runner. I might be able to get a whole drivetrain. The 5 speed auto from numbers is not a a340E. The 5 speed (which bolts up to the blocks on the uz series of motors)

I found the following for the transmission that I was thinking of.

A750F
5 Speed Automatic Transmission(4x4)Applications:
2003+ 4Runner (4x4)
2005+ Tacoma (V6 4x4)
2009 FJ Cruiser (Canada V6 4x4)
2003-2009 GX 470 (4x4)
2003-2007 LX 470 (4x4)
2005- Land Cruiser Prado 3.0 D4D (4x4) European version
2005 - Fortuner 4.0L
2005+ Hilux 4x4 (European Version Only), 1ST 3.520/2ND 2.042/3RD 1.400/4TH 1.000/5th 0.716/Rev 3.224/Final Drive 3.583

So the idea build that I might attempt (this might take a while to get together)

1996 T100 or 1996-1998 tacoma chassis (Under $2000)
Tubular custom chassis to mount coil rear suspension with air bags (already have coils, I will make the arms, frame and links or transfer from a 4runner. Cost under $1000)
4.0 Lexus v8 mounted to the a750f transmission and transfercase(motor $500 from wrecker with wiring and ecu, transmission and tcase $3000)
custom exhaust 2" dual with x-over
custom lightweight performance drive-shafts ($1500 max for both)
Cab with custom dash and interior, recaro bucket seats. ($2k budget)
Remove front diff and replace with supra 8 inch LSD (already have Diff and axles)

So that puts me at 10K in total for the ultimate truck with plenty of time to find the 38" tires and wheels. I figure I can build it over 6 months and I am training to be a welder this October. Gonna trim a lot of metal to keep the weight and cost down.

I wasn't saying that the A340E was a 5 speed trans I was saying that the a340e was used in the 2000-2004 4x4 Tundra.

As for the undertaking your talking about, I'd just go buy a tundra get the 4.7 with the 5 speed auto =P

Unless your a nuke welder, you must be selling dope to be making that kind of money. 10k in 6 months?

I have the money already and I make good money buying, fixing and selling cars that people have issues with as well as my normal job. I am gonna be welding this fall anyways and have a couple buddies who are Class A welders.
I thought about buying a tundra but I kinda want a custom unit and the cost is about 2/3rds of the tundra's that are around here.
I also just bought a 2003 4runner with the v6 that will be here on the 1st. gonna post some pics of it once its here. When I bought it I didn't know that the v6 was only a 4speed but it seems to have pretty good power anyways.

I have been working on my Supra for the last little bit. It looks like the motor option for the truck is gonna change some.

I will be putting in a TDI diesel from a 2003-2006 volkswagon with some mods right off the get go. New turbo, new manifold, flashed computer. I will be using an a750 5 speed automatic and I have yet to figure out what transfer cases I will be running (yes... plural)

I would really like to make this unit Fully IFS with unlockable hydraulic sway control. I have been trying to figure out how to get a couple feet of flex while still keeping fast offroading as an option.

My welding course took a fair bit of my money since I have the bad spending habits still. I will be putting my supra up for sale once its done and hope I get a good price for it so I can start my project with the motor/transmission/single case setup. One of my biggest issues is getting the big tires onto the truck without rubbing and it still looking good.

If this works out I might even put more into making it a true all round truck.

Well... I got a little help in Deciding what to do and even got some time off to do it in. The 4runner is no longer able to get a 5 speed swap. Sorry to any that were looking forward to this. Colossus got written off in a highway accident where someone pulled out on me while I was traveling home from work. I am very glad colossus was such a safe vehicle. Pictures below.. memorial was beautiful... now to find one with all the stuff already done to it to replace it with.

Here is Colossus as he sits now

Everyone is ok, I got minor injuries. I should be getting a settlement and a replacement check for the vehicle. I gotta work out with the ex how much she is taking and hopefully I can sell my supra to pay off the difference. I am thinking about going to a 2005 and up Tacoma since I need a truck as a welder.

Sorry for the delay.. not on the computer much while I am trying to heal up. If you look in the picture that shows both vehicles there is a side road that is at an angle to the highway. He was on that road. .pulled up to the stopsign and tried to cross my lane to go the opposite direction that I was traveling.

I just got insulted in the vehicle offer for 6300 dollars when I cant find one in my area for less then double that.

plus they dont want to cover the tires that were just put on the vehicle in December.

I am ready to file a complaint with Allstate for taking 2 months to even make an offer.
