4.0 VVTI swap to replace 3.SLOW

I really love my 95 4Runner but at almost 200K I know its only a matter of time. I thought about doing the 4.3 chevy swap and even a 350 but after thinking about it I would like to put one of the newer 4.0 Toyota motors in as a replacement. Now for the big questions --- will my 5 spd bolt up to the 4.0 ?? or is this swap impossible ? I really don't know and I haven't seen anyone talk of it or attempt it. I DO NOT want a 3.4 so don't even bring it up not gonna go there. I am looking for something much more current. I have come across a few salvage powerplants at a reasonable price so --- If you know tell me the good and the bad about this idea!

First hurdle you need to overcome is the oil pan. Unless you know how to fabricate aluminum and steel oil pans, you might want to just let it go. And whats wrong with the 3.4 swap? Lots of power, boost potential, aftermarket support, reliable, and it fits without any welding required. Am I missing something?

Ok so suppose I do need to fab a new pan. That seems like small taters. Will it fit is the biggie?? what about the tranny?will I need to find one to go with the new motor? What would be the best choice with my 4 runner?

i believe you need the matching tranny and an adapter to use your transfer case or one from a 22re because the transfer from the 4.0 dumps the driveline for the front diff on teh driver side. Then you gotta think about exhuast routing and all the wiring involved. and your fuel delivery. I have heard of a guy throwing one in his 97 taco but he ended up goin with a bigger motor. good luck with your research.

There is a pretty good thread on this site about a 4.0 swap.

Search and you shall find.

I would like to have one too but If it's gonna take re-inventing nuclear power -- fugettaboutit. I was thinking it might not be too bad-- guess i thunk wrong - huh. If i want a 4.0 too bad I'll just go buy a new FJC.
HMMM now the SBC don't sound so bad after all.
