shroud doesn't fit

shroud doesn't fit
after swapping in the 3.4 i went to put the old shroud from the 3.0 back on, since i was using that radiator, and the fan hits it on the drivers side. bad. not even a close fit?? is that a common problem?

thats what i dont understand since everythings the same it should fit. but its a good inch.5 off side to side. my brother even double checkedit while i was doing exhaust an went, "huh, sure as ˟˟˟˟". im not too concerned with it yet im just wondering if anyone else has seen this happen.

no, 1.5" overlap of the fan and shroud to the drivers side sorry. i didn't touch the trans. were still in the nineties and no over heating issues so im not too concerned with it. im using the same isolators from the 3.0 that was in it.

Same problem with '88 truck
I also attempted to re-use the 3.0 shroud and ran into the same problem. It is a good 1-2" off on drivers side. I confirmned this by locating the centerline of the 3.0 fan pulley in relationship to the base of the bottom of the motor. Then checked the 3.4 and sure enough it is over approx 2 inches more to the drivers side on the 3.4 than it is on my 3.0.
I have been running without a shroud for a week or so in 70-80 degree weather with a lot of stop and go traffic (NJ) without a problem. The engine seems to be settling in at 195 with an occasional 200 reading. I am running a 170 thermostat.
Since we are going into the fall I was going to let it ride through the winter and address it next spring by making a custom fiberglass shroud.
For the record: I have a '88 4Runner (was 3VZ) with a '97 T100 3.4 (5VZ). I am using the 3.0 radiator with the 3.4 fan and clutch.

hmmm.. an 88? Maybe that is the issue. Mine is 92 so totally different. Mine all bolted right up even with adding the bracket lifts for the radiator for the 1.5" body lift.
What year is yours again dirtdemon?

hmmmm. i cant think of anything. I used the stock 3.0 fan clutch, fan, shroud and bought a new 3.0 radiator. Since the block is physically the same as the 3.4 it all should go right back together.
Are you sure you have the motor sitting correctly on the mounts? Longshot but i cannot think of anything else.

Blocks are the same, but the fan pulley stantions are different, as well as the entire timing cover setup. The problem mine had is the centerline location of the fan pulley in relation to the centerline of the crank pulley is different between the 3.0 and 3.4.
There were two types of fan for the 3.0 over the years. One with an outer ring on it and one without.
The reason I think you are not having a problem dntsdad, is that you are probably using the 3.0 fan that does not have the outer ring on it (correct me if I'm wrong) This fan is smaller in diameter than the 3.0 with the outer ring, or the 3.4 fan.
I am using the 3.4 fan that's why my 3.0 shroud won't fit. I think if I went out and located a 3.0 fan without the ring, then everything would fit up. Atleast this is what my research has led me to believe.
azdirtdemon what fan are you using again?

Fan comparisons
Here is a quick pict I put together of the three different fans. The early and later 3.0 (dont quote me on the years, I am going from carparts.com) and the 3.4. It should also be noted that the 3.4 fan in the pict is for a 97 T-100. I don't know if tacos or 3rd gen runners are different.

i had the 3.0 fan with the ring but am now using the 3.4 fan out of the '97. but its far enough off that even a smaller fan would be noticably offcenter. only thing i could think of is having the mounts on the wrong sides but being as i changed mine one at a time with the motor installled, dumb i know,
i dont see how i could've switched them.

Doubt it's the mounts
If your 3.0 had the stamped steel type mounts I don't think there was a difference between the sides. Mine looked identical. Plus I definetly changed them from driver-driver and passenger-passenger and have the same problem as you are experiencing.
