should I swap, sorting my options
So here's the deal. I have an 89 22re 4x4 5 speed, what I'd like to do is swap in a 3rz because of the ease of installation vs a 3.4.
My predicament is getting the 3rz and all the parts, could get pricey.
On the other hand I have a wrecked 98 2wd auto 3.4 tacoma, it has an EGR system which I've read is kind of a bummer. The problem with this is having to get a manual ecu, trans/transfer case and fabing all the mounts. But I have most of what I would need, just more work.
Also living in CA there is smog issues. One scheme I've thought of is swapping the the 3.4 in with a 2wd manual trans so I wouldn't have to modify the exhaust, then switch back to 4x4 after it gets refereed. Anyone know if switching to 2wd would be a problem with the ref's?
Any suggestions? Anyone have any Leads on a wrecked tacoma with 2.7?

I dont think that switching the 4x4 would be an issue with smog. What will get you is if you change transmissions because then you change the ECM.
Finding a Manual ECM wouldnt be that hard. I know where there is one cheap. I hear the seller is a hell of a cool dude!!

You wouldnt need a newer ECM. You could just repin the plugs to adapt to whatever you are using. Thats what I will be doing in the next few days.
The reason I am using a different ECM is that this is a Tacoma ECM and there are a few circuits that the Tacomas have that my 4RUnner doesnt. Instead of messing with it, I decided to grab a manual Runner ECM instead.

So having a 95 ECM on a 98 motor won't be a problem with the ref? I'll have to find the right plugs for the MT ECU to splice into the auto harness because the plugs are probably different.

It has illustrations of all the ECU connectors Toyota used in the various first generation Tacomas, organized by year, engine, and transmission type. There was tremendous variety from year to year. In fact, no two years are the same, although most years share the same basic set of functions. Anyway, I think it would give you a much better sense of the scope of the decision you need to make.
As for the ref, the standard you will be held to is that the year of the motor you install will determine the smog equipment you must run, as well as the level of emissions you are allowed to put out. If you run a 98 motor, you will need to meet the emissions requirements for a 98 motor. It will probably be easier to do that with a 98 ECU, but I don't think they are going to pull the dash apart to check, though they may ask you. What they will do for sure if perform a visual check to make sure all of the standard 1998 Tacoma emissions equipment is in place, and they will test you fairly rigorously to make sure your emissions are within spec.

Whoa, that must have taken some time to compile. I'm definitely going with a 98 or newer ECU, just need to figure out how to get ahold of one. Looks like MT ECUs are scarce on ebay, my local mini truck wrecker is always too pricey.

You should be able to find one for no more than $100
I just bought a 97 Manual for $50 off there.
Dont get the "to 2/98". You want the 98. I believe the "to 2/98 will have the older plugs, and be more of a 97 wiring. Not a huge deal but since you are buying from scratch, may as well make it easy.
Also, if you have a Taco motor/donor, GET A TACO ECM. There are a few circuits that are different between the Taco and Runner.

Cool thanks. There's actually quite a few for sale. I found a 2wd 3.0 5 speed on craigslist also. I'm going to start accumulating all the rest of the parts I will need. Its been six years since I got that wreck, time to get something going.
