Ok so I am getting ready to pull the auto and put the manual 5 speed in. I picked up a 5 speed from 3.4 from a member here last week. That will give me the driver's side clutch operation that I need to keep the stock downpipe and crossover and pass smog again.

SO in review, I will have a 97 3.4 and a 95.5 5 speed and ECM.

My question is on the clutch and flywheel. I do not think that I will stay with the 3.4 r150 so i really do not want to put any, or at least as little as possible, in making in work. The guy I got the tranny from, gave me a clutch set, less the bearings. I dont mind the bearings but I realy so not want to buy a flywheel for a temp use.

I have all the 3.0 r150 flywheel, clutch, everything that was in great shape when it was pulled. Any chance that I can use the 3.0 stuff on the 3.4 tranny? I also have the old 3.0 starter to match the ring gear.

Any advice on the cheapest way to do this is?

ya but he is using the 3.0 r150. I am wondering if with my using the 3.4 tranny the 3.0 stuff will still work.

I think that i may just buy new 3.4 clutch and flywheel since it will work with both trannys anyway. It wouldnt be a total waste regardless of which tranny i end up using in the final form and from what i read the 3.4 clutch and flywheel setup is "better" anyway since its larger.

 

Interesting. I have been considering a 5 speed swap. So is the 3.4 5 speed transfer case a bolt in to the 3.0 drive shafts, or is the tcase on the opposite side?

I have a 3.4 starter and a manual cross member sitting in the garage. Dont know whether to sell or keep picking up parts as and when needed for the complete swap.

 

everything 95.5 and up is a driver's drop except for a couple of years of the T-100 i think

 

IIRC both of these tranmissions are interchangable with each other, other that the transfer case drop. Both starters (3.0 and 3.4) will work with the 3.0 trans and the 3.0 clutch set-up. IIRC the only difference between the 3.0 and 3.4 flywheel and clutch assy. is the diameter of the clutch disc and pressure plate (hence a larger bolt circle on the 3.4).
The 3.0 clutch set-up seems to work well with the stock 3.4 hp (non-supercharged), but you do have to use the 3.0 flywheel. If you choose to use the 3.4 clutch, you will have to use a 3.4 flywheel.

 

I am looking for used 3.4 flywheels to then take over to Marlin and have them resurface it. Can anyone count the teeth on their 3.4 flywheelso i know which one i need please?

Napa shows a 120 tooth version and a 115. I would assume the 115 is 4cyl but want to make sure before i buy a used one and have it be wrong.

Marlin make a Taco clutch kit, so i will just buy that i guess but they offer no flywheels for 3.4's.

Autozone has one for 80 bucks.

 

I really hate using Autozone parts.......I may have to if I cant find a Toyota one soon though.

 

it's a flywheel for crying out loud. it's not like it needs to be an ultra light racing flywheel right? check with you local wrecking yards, i'm sure you can get one on the cheap.

Just dont trust Autozone parts all that much.

 

I just counted mine for you 120 tooth definetly. I also was considering using a replacement from autozone since I can't seem to find anyone local to resurface mine for less than $100. I figured 80 for a brand new one why not? It is just a big hunk of metal. I guess the only question would be strength.

I went to Napa and they have a new one; no core for $100. Has a huge MADE IN CHINA on it. Anything that large that spins that fast and is made in China makes me nervous.

Autozone wants 75 for a core that I dont have.

I'll probably just junkyard one so that I have a factory Toyota and take it over to Marlin and have them do their magic to it.

 

THIS! For exactly the reasons you list. There's no way I want some cheaply made piece of crap spinning at 5k-6k rpm within a few inches of my feet. I found a used OEM flywheel online from a junk yard in Rancho Cordova. It was ~$55 shipped, and another $70 to have it resurfaced locally. I'd consult car-part.com or just call around. Car-part.com had pages of them.

Couldn't find a number on it, but I looked it up and it seems to be the same for all years of the 3.4 (13405-62030) $355.14 brand new on toyotapartscheap.com eeekkk! Yeah probably better off sourcing from junkyard and having resurfaced.

Oh, and my understanding of the starter differences are that you use the starter for the flywheel. (i.e 3.0 starter use 3.0 flywheel) when you use the 3.4 starter with older R150 passenger side clutch slave bellhousing you have to drill out the threads on one of the mounting holes of the starter to mount it. You shouldn't have this problem with your newer 3.4 trans since it should have the clutch slave on the driver side.

Hate to bump a old thread. But I'm doing a budget 3.4 swap. And my 3.0 clutch/flywheel/pressure plate/through out, all have low miles (under 5k)

I've read that "mechaniman" was able to reuse all that stuff. Anyone else? What starter was used?

I got a dumb question.....
Is it possible to just swap the bell housing? I thought the clutch slave cylinder is attached to the bell housing.....
I'm just thinking out loud...or farting...
