96 4runner 3.4 A/T to M/T
So I picked up a 3.4 out of a 96 4runner auto. putting it in my 88 pick up with a 3.0 M/T, wondering if I can just remove extra wiring and find a M/T ecu. Also does it matter year or model wise for a ecu ?

It is easier if the wiring harness and ECM match. The Automatic ECM can be repined to work.
You would have to get the correct plugs for the manual ECM and then repin as needed .
Real good Idea to have both the EWD`s for the engine year and model and the truck.

This may make me sound like a broken record, but bear with me:
Read, study, memorize the swap 101 thread ( https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...-101-a-239002/ ), then read it again.
It has WAY more information regarding converting a 96 A/T 4Runner 3.4 to M/T than you would think (and FWIW, the 96 and 97 4Runner EWDs are identical, but if you do find a difference, post up and let me know, because I haven't found any yet).

I literally did this swap a month ago on my 1997 4Runner.
You DO NOT have to re-pin the ECU.

PM me with questions if you have any.

I gotta say study the 3.4 swap section .
It should give you all or most of what you need.
In the 96 4runner the Auto and Manual ECM`s use different plugs.
Also the fourth plug from the cab harness to the ECM is not on your engine harness . So has to be sourced.
Brian you did not swap into a 88 things are a little different

Guys have used the A/T ECU and did something (jumper the NSS to ground, maybe? I have no idea) even with swapping a 3.4, but from what I've gathered, you will ALWAYS have the check engine light on. The only real problem with this is that it could mask a real problem, unless of course, you get into the habit of routinely checking for codes, which I would find to be much more of a pain than spending a little extra and swapping ECUs and rewiring.
If there's any chance of needing it to be inspected (such as for CA SMOG) you cannot pass visual with the check engine light set.

Thanks for the tips, I got a call from the yard I bought the motor from. Seems the computer was wrong and it is a manual trans, however someone jacked the ecu already so the are cutting me a deal on it now. I went out today and removed the engine harness myself, the only problem was it was hit hard on the driver side and laying on the ground so I had to cut the harness where it runs down the side of the motor heading toward back. He said after they pull it I can get what's left out, y question is what all is in that section ? Also cut out the obd port with about 12" of wire on it. I didn't think taking everything out under dash mattered also think I got the other ecu plug too. Let me know what I missed and what not please, this is my first yoga project so bare with me lol. Well I did put in a 1jz in my old bosses 01 taco but that's a different story altogether. Thanks in advqance ..
