Question wax over rust or ???

Hey, just a couple of questions. I've started to take notice as to how my paint looks like crap compared to all the pics on here so I've decided to do something about it. I've been reading all the treads and need a few answers I haven't found while reading. I plan on getting the 7336sp with the 6" backing plate. Does this mean that I can use this backing plate instead of buying another one from griot's or do I still need to buy one from them? I don't know I thought maybe there was something special about their plate. Also I've got a little rust where there was a sunroof wind deflector and on other spots. Is there something I need to do to keep these from getting worse or am I just screwed? I don't know sanding or polishing to get the rust off. I know sorry for the long post and I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff so thanks in advance.

You need either the Griot's backing plate as listed on my detail site, or the Meguair's one.

I am sure too if you look in the yellow pages for auto paint supply stores that they will have the proper backing plate.
They also carry pads, but I am partial to the red wax pads from Griot's.

A new backing plate is needed as it has the Velcro on it to hold the Velcro'd wax/plish pads in place.

I have never had to deal with rust on a rig, so I can not help ya there

Permatex used to make a black phosphate pen that would react with the rust and permanently stop it. Then you could paint it. I have some that is real old, probably can find it at an auto parts store. It comes in a pen for easy application.

OK i live in Minnesota and fix rust on my truck just about every year so I give so info to put you in the right direction. As for the good news the amounts of rust that you have are very minor and will be easy to fix. If you go to checkers or any auto parts store and look in the body repair section you will find everything that you need. All you will need is sandpaper, rust treatment(brush on stuff works best) and body filler. First buy some of the auto sandpaper that looks kinda like a sponge its either green or brown, you take that and scrub area with rust and try to remove all loose paint and rust(It probably won't get rid af all the rust's color, then brush on your rust treatment and let dry for atleast 24 hours if you let it dry 48 hours the better you are. Truck must be in a moisture free environment while drying. Once it is dry take some 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper and sand it in a circular motion to try to smooth out surface, if you can't get it perfect get some body filler and apply it on surface, I generally spred it with my finger but if you have a plastic puddy knife that works best. You are building up the body filler to get rid of the uneven surface from that sanding, let the filler dry then lightly sand it till it looks smooth. Tape off area with blue painters tape and apply primer with rust preventative in it, let dry then apply topcoat of paint allow dry then wait 48 hours the rub it with rubbing compound to blend new paint with old. Forgot to say you will also need tape, primer and body paint.
It really isnt that hard hope I didn't scare you, any question send me an email at blainelukens@msn.com
